Do you guys have the fencing swords and protective gear, or is there something else that can be used? Sounds fun!

No gear! we made our own swords out of 1/2" PVC & padded them with foam pipe insulation. (3/4" for Adventure or Expedition Rangers)Phillip Gross wrote:Do you guys have the fencing swords and protective gear, or is there something else that can be used? Sounds fun!
Target area is waist up-(except no head, neck, hands). Those are fouls. Anything below the belt is a foul.
Points are: 1 point per touch, note I said TOUCH, not drive it through the opponents body ( I have to emphasize that a lot) 5 points is a win. Fouls are 1 point, head or neck are 3 pointers. unnecessary roughness is a 2 pointer. Anyone who has 3 head/neck fouls or 3 roughness fouls sits down for the rest of the night.
Here are some pics from last year. The orange tape on the swords is to help the Ref's see the point of the sword when its moving fast.

Re: May thread
Yeah its great to be able to have pics again.
Fencing is the hands down high point of the Ranger year.
I am seen as someone who is tough to beat & frequently challenged by the older Rangers. They may be faster, but I am way better at tactics.

Will do Chris. I had posted in the chat box earlier, but I think you'd stepped away. Then you came back and I was already in the sack. Lol... oh well, we'll get it together! I do like that new feature.
This new site also has a mobile version when I'm on my phone. I've got it switched to classic right now, but I may go back to mobile. Very nice!

Re: May thread
Tnite we finished L4 of red 102.
My GMA's mother got a better pic of Ben in his uniform decked out with his new ribbon stack. I edited the power point and slideshow to include it.
Everything is lining up nicely for Sun's Court of Honor.

Re: May thread
I like the ribbons look. Do they have chest ribbons for every merit? If so, will they even keep them for the future? If not, are there sources to get ribbons that could represent different merits?
Still not sure what to do with our merits....

Re: May thread
Ribbons for each merit is old school. I can show you pics of that later. Each Advanced Award aka merit had a blue/white plastic ribbon prior to early '90s. Early '90s they switched to colored cloth ribbons. In 2000s they went to patches you sew on back of vest. The first 8 ribbons beginning from your bottom right to left (closest to his heart) is the 8 merit categories. Third row far left is rk gta. Fourth row from right to left is dr falcon, hawk, and gold eagle. Fifth row is right to left bronze then silver. The GMA drape will mount center flush on his pocket flap below the blue merit ribbon. You can add numerals to each merit color to show number earned in a category. I bought the joined ribbon holder from www.usmedals.com site. Gph offers joined holders in triplicate only.

Re: May thread
This is in reply to Dan's reply to me. for some reason I can't reply with a quote....
I looked over at the GPH website and saw the colored ribbons. They say they're to be used with some numerals, but I didn't dig around enough to see what they looked like. While the Bible merits are colored and numbered, the skill merits are only colored and named. So how would that work? I assume that it's by design and they're trying to phase them out altogether, but is there a way around it?
For instance are there distributors anywhere that you could get ribbons from that simply represent a particular merit such as "Tool Craft" or "Hiking" etc? A numbered colored ribbon is nothing more than a representation anyway. Maybe the Bible merits could stay with the color and the highest number achieved, but that wouldn't work very well with the skill merits.
I think I'm leaning towards the ribbon bars if I can find a good source of ribbons to represent the various skill merits. Any ideas???
As far as the ribbons being "old school", I'm ok with that. I just don't like the little blue vests!

Re: May thread
I don't know of any ribbons to represent merits since they were discontinued in 2000s.
When they switched to navy blue vest I really liked it better since it was a darker color. It also made RK and DR/AR/ER vest same color. I am sure you can find tan denim or some other suitable color vest or have someone with skills buy material and make them.
With numerals and ribbons one color represents 1 merit of that color. If you earned photography and knife and hawk you'd place a #2 in the green merit ribbon. I used to update mine and my boys in my old outpost. Since coming here to Ohio I removed my numerals when I bought a new joined holder. Never bothered to keep updating them. Ben's ribbons should be in double digits for most but I think its a lot of work and expense.

Re: May thread
Found a website that sells all kinds of ribbons. My thoughts are that I could create a key of sorts that would show each ribbon and what it represented.

Re: May thread
Had a good meeting tonight. After Bible merit time, we went out to play some dodge ball. Ended up having such a good time that we just kept playing until it was time to go. We've not had a night like that, so I decided to go with it and just have a fun night. We played teams of boys against boys at first, but then we started playing boys against the commanders. Had a good time beaming those boys!

Re: May thread
I think that the BEST activity that I found for our Rangers was Capture the Flag.
If you have a little bit of space, and at least 8 kids, it teaches tactics, speed, stealth, team-work, offense, and defense.
We just use a couple of orange cones for the flags. You will anso need something to mark "jail". I like to make about a 10 foot circle with rope.
They will play until you force them to quit. You can even put colored glow-sticks on their arms to designate which team they are on after dark. In the daylight, I sometimes use colored plastic surveyor's tape on their arms or as head-bands.
And at the end, you will have a bunch of tired, happy, sweaty kids.

Re: May thread
In the middle of a nice 3 & a half day weekend.
Went & visited my brother in law in the hospital (He had surgery Thursday)
Then did some fruitless ammo shopping on the way home.
ran up to the church later & played some baseball with the kids. Quikly realized how much excercise I didn't get this winter
