Serious question. When we face a seriously bad situation will it be too late, or can there be a turn around with our military and citizens?

Claymore,

Have any experience with the P90 or FNH Five Seven?
What’s your opinion on the 5.7x28mm round?

March Greetings 2022 - Page 2 Empty Re: March Greetings 2022

Dan, you must remember that I am a Dinosaur.

MY war was Vietnam. In Special Forces, we were introduced to the .30 cal Tokarov. THAT was the screamer of the day. We were shooting targets at 100 yards with those pistols. It shares some commonality with the 5.7, in that it is essentially a long 9mm case, necked down to 7.62 mm (rather than the 5.7).

In its day, it was the only pistol cartridge that could be reliably expected to penetrate soft body armor. I wrote the Off-Duty Carry requirements for our Department, and it read, "....shall be a revolver or pistol of not less than .30 caliber....". I sold it to the Administration as being easier, than to specify 9mm, .45, .38, .357, etc. But it also allowed my partner to carry his .30 Tokarov, off-duty.

So to answer your question, it should also be a flat-shooting screamer. Ammo would be relatively light for the power that it punches. The biggest reason that I would not personally get one is because it would give me an entirely new caliber that I would have to set up to reload. I do not know about the availability of brass. Dropping pistol powder into a .22 caliber hole might be a pain. I do not know how available brass would be (the 9mm, .45, .380, .38 Special, .45 ACP, .45 Super, and 10mm keep me busy, at this time).

Also, with that small case, I do not know how achievable it would be to get factory performance on a home Loading Bench.

And I do not know the "Pressure Curve" of the 5.7 Cartridge. Some calibers become very unforgiving, when you start to "goose" their limits.

A poll was recently released, with the question being "If America was in a similar situation as Ukraine, would you flee or fight? The results:

Flee Fight
Democrat 52% 40%
Republican 25% 68%

Predictable. But it tells me there's 2nd Amendment support among a sizable number of Dems.

When it comes to the military, if we can purge the senior officers that Obama groomed for senior leadership, then we can turn it around. But time is literally running out.

I figured it was after your service time but wondered if you had either one of them in your “two gun” collection. Thanks for the other the other information.

Post by Phillip Gross March 13th 2022, 6:25 am

Some polar vortex came through and it's down in the low 20's F this morning. Went from maybe a long sleeved shirt in the mornings recently to this, and then it'll be back to what that by tomorrow. Brrrr!

I'm about to head over to my dad's house to pick him, my brother, and two cousins up to head down to Atlanta for my uncle's memorial service who passed a couple days ago. I hadn't seen him in years. We used to all meet down at the Rolex 24 in Daytona every year from 1993 to sometime in the early 2000's when he quit coming. He and my aunt would come up for Thanksgiving too until maybe the mid to late 90's. He was absolutely a believer though and is now with Father. In fact sometime in the 90's they began attending a Messianic-Jewish temple. Their hearts were very heavy for Israel and the Jews. Gen. 12:3

Last night, we had a guest preacher at our church.

He said, "If you can ever find a Messianic Rabbi, grab him.  They are a tremendous wealth of information, and real handy to have around.".

Then that makes total sense. I can eat grits, meaning they don't make me throw up, but I never order them. So yes I see! Like grits, cold weather can be endured, but who would actually want it? Laughing

I'm being tongue in cheek of course. I think my disdain comes from all the years of working in the elements. The saying goes that you can always put more clothes on, but you can only take so much off. And while that might hold true for outdoor sports like skiing, hunting, or just going for a walk, it falls apart when you're trying to perform meticulous tasks where you either wear gloves and fumble around, or take them off to gain dexterity and your hands go numb.

In Special Forces, I was on an Arctic Team.

We did an operation in Alaska in January. 5 day mission, on snowshoes, sleeping outside, with no tents; only improvised shelters, that you made that night, and then moved on, the next morning.

THAT was not the really bad part. The worst for me was, you had to take your gloves off for some things (you can't go to the bathroom with mittens on), and by the second day, my fingers were cracked and bleeding.

I remember a book from back in school that had a man in sub-zero conditions. Supposedly his urine would freeze before hitting the ground. Any of thar seem plausible based on what you experienced?

Phil,

I was off the Net, not ignoring you.
(stop being so sensitive)

The coldest that I was in was -32 Fahrenheit. I do not recall making any yellow icicles in mid-air, but I am not saying that the story is false.

However, as I'd said, we slept in improvised shelters in Alaska. My team-buddy and I would build a poncho hooch: 2 ponchos snapped together on the snow, and 2 ponchos snapped together at a shallow angle above you (with lines tied to a tree).

You slept with your feet on the "out side" and your head on the "in side". The trick to make it effective is to have the ponchos above you fairly low, keeping still warmer air above your face (which is esposed by a small hole in your arctic sleeping bag).

But if it is TOO close, you will learn at about 3:00 in the morning, when the moisture from your breathing formes a stalagtite on the poncho above you, and its weight pulls the poncho down, and the icycle starts to tickle your nose.

My last post wasn't aimed at your delayed response. I was cutting up with Joecool about his reply.

But I just don't think I could handle those types of temperatures, especially to try to sleep in. The coldest I've slept in was 14*F in a 0*F bag. I was warm enough in that situation.

We have had some nasty cold windy weather the past several days. I've ended up with somewhat of a sinus infection on the left side of my head. Woke up this morning with ear pain on that side, so I started with some meds to head off a full-on ear infection.

You know what you get on a hot summer day? Sweat.

You know what you can get from nasty cold weather and wind? Sick!!

I keep telling y'all that the cold weather is evil.... Laughing Laughing

70 degrees on Sunday. Two inches of snow this morning. Yeah, you never know what to expect up here in the Rockies. But we don't get hurricanes, tornadoes or ice storms.
