June 2021 Thread
The wife and I watched all the Rifleman episodes and then switched to Sea Hunt. I decided to read up on Lloyd Bridges to see what he'd done before that series. Lots and lots of movies. I should have stopped there, because I then found out that he had joined the Communist party. Things turned south on him during the McCarthy hearings, but he agreed to inform on other Hollywood Commies, and they left him alone. Later in life, he was a fan of a one-world government. Grrrrr. Another childhood hero bites the dust.

Next thing, you're going to tell me that Santa Claus was as "Red" on the Inside as he was on the Outside.

Tomorrow is June 6:
The 77th Anniversary of D-Day, when 156,000 American, British, and Canadian Troops struck heavily fortified Northern France by Ships, Landing Craft, Parachutes, & Gliders.
Let's hope that they're holding a special Dress Formation and Recognition Banquet in Heaven for those who participated.

Just back from camping by a lake. Sitting there this morning, I tried to visualize the landing craft, first from the perspective of the ships, and then from the beach. No one wants to repeat history, but I wondered if we have the leaders, military and political, to pull it off again.

As a Staff-Grade Officer, I'm sure that you had familiarization courses in common OpFor terms.

Re: June 2021 Thread
Don't do Facebook. But occasionally, a notice pops up in my email, probably because they're connected to a family member. So I got to see my granddaughter response to a guy's posting of a "word search" page. It was the kind of content that is touchy-feely. I looked up the guy's name. Turns out he's a bigshot in the Hare Krishna movement.
If you're around my age, you remember those shaved-bald guys in orange robes jumping up and down. Well, they're back trying to lead another generation astray, using the technology that has enslaved young people. Why do they accept everything they see on the mini-screen? Why do they not bother to check things out for themselves?

Participated in the internment of my brother-in-law this morning. He was a Vietnam vet and also retired from the National Guard. Following us was the internment of 3 more veterans, with no family present. So we stayed to honor them as well.

Re: June 2021 Thread
That occurs, way too often.
We had a photo and short write-up about our Funeral Honor Guard in last week's newspaper (for a town of 3,000).
Our phone number was in the article for Point-of-Contact. So far, I have seen no interest.

I take it that you are a part of the honor guard there? I'm thinking about it for here.

Re: June 2021 Thread
When I retired from being a principal, one of the things I did was contact that small town's police chief to offer my services as a volunteer. Never got a response from that, or from a follow-up. A year later the chief resigned over a sexual assault charge, which the local paper took several months to report. And nearly a full year after his departure, there's now a mismanagement investigation and yet another charge, this time for kiddie porn.
Part of me is glad not to have been in there during all of that. The rest of me wishes that I was there to help the remaining 3 cops. I wonder if they're going to turn towards the county sheriffs to help or take over.

Yeah, I'm kind-of the Commander, mainly because I am furnishing the rifles and blanks. I picked up over 1,000 6.5mm Swedish Blanks for 6 cents each and another 400 7.62 NATO Blanks for about 40 cents each.
I can currently field a 5-Rifle Firing Squad, and will be able to do 2 more, when I install 7.62 chamber adapters in a couple of my U.S. Model 1917 Rifles.
No Government-Owned Rifles or Ammunition, so I don't have to worry about Paperwork and Inspections. However, if I can recruit a member of the National Guard or Reserves, I can submit paperwork for him to receive Retirement Points Credit.

Re: June 2021 Thread
Everything goes in cycles, right? Water, sun spots, Buttigieg on his way to a photo op. But why the military? Why such incomprehensible swings? Did Obama's purge of generals and admirals clear the way to what's going on now?
The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is a self-identified woke white supremacist. General Millie (Vanilli) has totally bought in to critical race theory and is pushing it hard on the services.
I feel bad for the guys and gals who have invested too much time in uniform to just walk away.

Re: June 2021 Thread
I fully understand.
If a young man wants to go into the Military now, I would fully SUPPORT him, but I would not ENCOURAGE him.
