2 months ago we started making wooden canteens.  With the cold weather and ice we have missed the last 3 wed nights and I have almost forgotten where we were at on this merit!   HA!  Trailer has been loaded with paint booth, sanders, dust collection, drills and such.  Here is a link to our activities on this merit!  I made these videos so the boys could see what was going on between the wed nights.  I would go to part four if you want to see the canteens!

We are just about to finish up hopefully this week!    Even water proofing with BEE's Wax!

Mark, I watched the canteen video. Have you ever thought about the boys making them for a fundraiser? You could also offer them with a requested personal touch, like your "Grin." Avoid business-related paperwork by advertising a suggested offering. I'd buy more than one.

I didn't send the latest video. It has all of the boys custom lasered What they wanted on one side for example  "Big Buck"  on top and a Outpost 167 2021 at the Bottom.  Will try and get it up loaded and send the new link.

These canteens if bought off of the web would run between 55 and 150.00.  If  I was making them again I would make them out of White or Red Oak.

We will finish up this merit hopefully this wed night.  It's been a fun project.  Last time I did this merit I had a woodworking shop at our Ranger Building at our church that was 50/50 mine and the outposts.  It was nice having that room and heat and our own space.  It made for a much better merit teaching as we were able to do it all right there.   However as with all good things.  The devil gets his nose in there and if he can will ruin ministry every time.   One good thing.  With God's help I am able to side step the devil and get the ministry going again and again and again.   In my experience.....I think the devil uses well intentioned church folk more than he uses his demons.  I hope he never uses me to disrupt ministry.

If you ever decide to do it, my order is first in line.

My Brother-in-Law is a Civil War Reenactor (from Georgia), and I know how pricey those things can be. Every couple of years, we make "tintype" photographs of the boys in Civil War Uniforms with Muskets that are taller than them. Unfortunately, we can only afford the cheaper "facsimile" canteens.

I sent off some custom made FCF lanterns made out of Cedar that was harvested off of our RR campground. Carved in their FCF names in the Top or something they wanted and mailed them out for donation. Mailing cost 20.00 per lantern. They gave what ever God lead them to give to our RR District. (I hope they follow through with their donations...ha! Checks in the mail... I know how that goes being the Company Clerk and "Pledges" Some never make it past their lips. Yet I enjoyed making them and it was Christmas time. So 17 lanterns went out. Here is the build video on that. Well here is the page that I keep updating with projects. They and the other stuff is on here.

Mark,

It might be worth your time to look around and see if you know any small business owners that have a “stamps.com” account.

That’s the account that, when you log in the weight/dimensions/recipient’s address, will figure the postage and print the label with a bar code.

Average savings is about 20% per package. If the shipping is $20.00, that could save you $4.00 a piece.

The downfall about having a “stamps.com” account is that there is a monthly maintenance fee, whether you use it, or not. But if a business owner let you run the items through his account, it wouldn’t cost him anything, so long as you reimbursed him for the postage.

(There is an option to display the postage paid on the label, so it wouldn’t be hard to have a bunch of items weighed & labeled, just tally the postage paid in a note book, and reimburse him there, on the spot.)

Thanks. i just mailed through USPS ground. I sent 3 packages to 3 different states at the same price each. The rest of them I handed off to various folk to get them hand delivered to our members.

The money is one that I don't want to go in the hole on. Yet I don't care about profit either. Mailing was a pain. I made a 1/4" plywood box jointed box to house the lanterns in that I mailed. Ha that box was worth 10 bucks as it can be used to protect the lanterns in while traveling or storage.

Thanks for the mailing tip. I will keep it in mind if I can save someone some money it will be better if it's not a lot of trouble.
