April 2017 Thread
Got my boys good TWICE yesterday on April Fools jokes. We were riding down the road taking their motorcycles to the bike shop for some work (I'm too busy lately to do it myself) and they were talking about Pow Wow coming up. They were discussing the date of it, what's the date today (ding! April 1st. They reminded me) and such. So I said in a somber tone "Oh yeah, we're not going to be going to Pow Wow this year. We booked a wedding for that weekend (I wouldn't) and the other commanders have things going on too, so the outpost won't be going". They looked as if someone had just died! So I immediately yelled "April Fools Day!!!". It was that wonderful combination of relief and comic anger at the joke. As they were settling back down and jabbering about how terrible I was to say that, and how they had forgotten about April Fools, I said, "well to make up for that terrible joke I just pulled on you, I'll tell you the real reason we're taking your bikes to the dealership. We're trading them in on brand NEW dirtbikes!". "REALLY?!?" they said. "NO!!! April Fools AGAIN!!!" And I laughed and laughed and laughed. They did too. It was a good time.

Re: April 2017 Thread
I'm always thankful when April Fool's falls on a non-school day. Don't have to deal with all the students' attempts.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.....
Not only is it snowing in my backyard, but a gift is on the way. Susan Rice, she of "It was just a spontaneous reaction to a video" (Benghazi) infamy, has been revealed as the one who committed felonies in the political weaponizing of national security intelligence. And it started a full year before Trump was sworn in.
Yes, I know that everyone at the IRS escaped accountability in the political weaponizing of that institution, but Obama's close friends are no longer in charge of the Dept of Justice. What did Obama know, and when did he know it?

Re: April 2017 Thread
The overnight retreat went well. Twenty guys turned out for our survival-themed outing. Boys caught big rainbows and walleye, which we augmented with donated MREs. Some rain the first day, followed by a very cold night. Saturday was gorgeous, and we returned to school and beat the next storm system. Rain the rest of the day, and now we have snow on the ground.

Catch the news story about a man that bought a vintage Russian tank to add to his collection? During the restoration, he found 5 gold bars in the fuel tank, worth over $2 million. "Tanks" a lot, comrade!

I was just reading over this, again, and it reminded me of a line in the greatest of all movies, "The Green Berets".
The little Vietnamese boy, Ham-Chunk, says to Sgt. Peter-san (the scrounger), "Ha-ha. You funny. Ha-ha."

Easter weekend Friday and Saturday. Heading out for a over night 1 mile in 1 mile out backpack and then next day float trip of 8.5 miles. Buffalo National River awaits. 17 signed up to go. Bring your own, cook your own or go hungry. Now all I need to take care of is 6 canoes and 14 kayaks and pick up and delivery and gear .... and... and... trailers...and...and. FUN! Camping! Christian devotions and fellowship. Woo who Rangers!

Never a huge John Wayne fan. Nothing wrong with him per sé, just not my favorite. Thought he was good in "The Quiet Man" with Maureen O'Hara though.

Re: April 2017 Thread
Phillip Jr flat tracked for the first time tonight (Saturday). He came home with a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd in the three classes he raced in. Not too shabby for not having raced since 2015, AND never having flat tracked before.
Think we might do play in the dirt this season and revisit road racing next year if finances and time allows. The entry fees are less for the dirt track, the tracks are either in SC or NC, so travel isn't as pricy, and they only run on Saturday nights, so we don't have to miss Sundays at church. Of course, here it is nearly 3am and I'm just getting ready for bed,.... but I'm still home. No hotels, etc.
Also, this is good cross training for him because it teaches him how to control a slide. A lot of the top road racers have their roots in flat track.

There's a 3-book series on Captain Jack Aubrey. This is the only one made into a movie, but it changed the "bad guy" from a US ship to a Spanish one. (Got to sell tickets, you know.) In my opinion, it's the most realistic/authentic rendering of life on the high seas in the 19th century. A true classic. I spent an hour on Aubrey's ship before moving to Montana. (No, I'm not that old!)
He is risen....

No, but like one of those, a Quartermaster was one of the original "right arm" ratings. Navigation was my forte, way before GPS was developed. I was pretty handy with a sextant.

A neat bit of Alchemy. I never got to handle one of those, but kind-of wanted to. Don't you need a really accurate watch for best effectiveness?
My work was with a Lensatic Compass. I could also handle an M-2 Aiming Circle and Charge Tables to put a Mortar Battery into the same Grid Square (that's before the ships all had rockets with Lasers and GPS Navigational Devices).

If your timepiece is 1 minute off, your fix location can be as much as 15 miles off. For the best accuracy when you're shooting the stars, you need a partner recording the times and altitudes. And since the ship is moving, you have to shoot fast to keep the fix tight. That means shooting 5-7 stars in less than 2 minutes.
In the old days, only the officers knew how to fix their position. Speaking of alchemy, they oftentimes added a lot of mumbo-jumbo out on deck. That was to convince the crew that they stood no chance of safely going somewhere after a mutiny against the officers. Without Mr. Christian on their side, the Bounty's crew would never have gone against Captain Bligh.

A movie about the Navy? I got dinged for Pearl Harbor when thats really about two army pilots.
I do like Master and Commander. Russel Crowe is pretty awesome in almost any movie.
Are you not entertained?

Springtime. Today I mowed the lawn, sprayed weeds, and built planters for our upcoming potato crop. And now its snowing, enough to cover everything up. We have a saying here in Montana...you're not safe until Mother's Day.
