Sometimes it can work the other way where Dad sees his son needs discipline but mom is too lenient. It is definitely a balance of the two. To make another Star Trek reference its like when Kirk was split in two. One was emotional and other logical. When brought back together it made him balanced again.

My wife always liked that episode more than I did.

But since you put it that way, I suppose that there may be a lesson to be learned from that story.
