February 2024 Thread
At least in another time and place, journalism was supposed to bring us all the news. We sifted through it and were smart enough to draw our own conclusions. And then smart phones invaded and began to dumb us all down and addict us to the mini-screen. As a result, newspapers began to fail, with the survivors on left-wing billionaire life support. Who looks at newspapers anymore, especially when they charge us $3 for a thin gruel of daily indoctrination?
On my internet home page, I used to get a rolling look at the supposed news stories of the day, both right and left. At a particular point in time, I caught on to the fact that the big media outlets were actually buying time to get their stories onto that home page. And now I've recognized another change. Artificial intelligence now heavily skews the news that comes to me personally. How else to explain the glut of naval stories, whether they're out of England, India, Russia or Lichtenstein? AI knows my likes and dislikes. Meta Data has built a profile on me. Big Brother knows who I am.
And you, too.

That's why you've got to throw some random clicks in there. And don't just back out immediately. Let it sit on a page while you go get another cup of coffee or go check the mail like you're reading it. You've got to shake up the algorithm.

In 2006, I was in a light aircraft crash that broke my back, and hastened my retirement as a police officer. My wife never really liked that I was a pilot, and this (rightfully) was the icing on the cake.
A few months back, I was in my office. She walked in and said, "What are you looking at?".
I said, "Porn".
She came around the desk, to the front of the screen, and saw that I had a program that was tracking all the aircraft flying over the United States with transponders working.
She said, "I'd rather have you looking at porn".

Before the crash, why was she opposed?

She was afraid that I would die in a plane crash (and she was nearly correct).
In my time in aviation, I had maybe 300 acquaintances in the sport. 7 perished in aviation deaths (there could have been more that died, after I left the sport).
Maybe, not the best odds.

Re: February 2024 Thread
Howdy folks.
Work is slow at the moment. Feast or famine seems to be the case. But that is normal for winter my line of work.
A week ago, several days of rain coupled with a rapid snow melt caused the city storm sewers to back up & flooded our church basement with 3 inches of water. Finally got the basement dewatered, but we are still dealing with the clean up of that mess. Lots of stuff to be thrown out. But a lot of it was old junk that was no longer need anyway.
But, everyone is well Prasie the Lord.

I hate flooding from backed-up sewers. I suffered that in Milwaukee, back in the 1990's. Lots of damage and wet firearms to clean on an emergency basis.
Now I have built my house on top of a ridge in Mississippi. Until water can figure how to flow uphill, I should be safe.

My wife tells me that I can go back to flying, ANY time that I want to.......
(She also tells me that I DON'T WANT TO.)

Well, to be practical,
Spending $120.00 per hour to bore holes in the sky is kind-of a selfish hobby.

I'll split it with you if you can get a two-seater. We spend a lot more per hour to sit in an overcrowded fuselage, breathing other people's germs, listening to crying babies, and eating crackers, while some DEI hire flies you through the unfriendly skies of dis-United.

Yeah, but.....
When traveling for an hour in that over-cramped tube, you cover 550 miles. If you're riding with me, you will cover between 78 and 120 miles.
(LO and SLO be the Way to GO)
The last time that I flew between Waukesha, Wisconsin and Cassville, on the Mississippi River, it took 3 hours of flying time, with a fuel-stop, south of Madison.

Definitely something I'd like to take up one day if finances allowed. I think I just like operating machines. Always have. Motorcycles, race cars, etc. Have toyed around with getting my CDL because I hope to one day buy a super C. Most of them are titled as RV's and don't require a CDL, but I think I'd rather have the training if I'm going to operate a Class 8 truck. And flying. Would love to fly.

Re: February 2024 Thread
I was both a Private Pilot and an Ultralight Pilot. I actually LIKED being around Ultralight Pilots better than General Aviation Pilots.
G/A pilots were often "snooty" with a pecking order, depending on how high your ratings were, how many hours you had in your log book, etc.
Ultralight pilots were generally much more willing to share knowledge, tools, etc.
That was, until the FAA killed ultralight flying by outlawing 2-seat trainer aircraft, back in 2006, and requiring that any "dual" training had to be in a $90,000.00 certified aircraft.

This song came out 4 years ago, but I heard it for the first time tonight. Simple, but powerful anthem that all the de-churched of the last decade need to hear.

Re: February 2024 Thread
My former school has asked me to share at an upcoming chapel, date unknown. I've done a few in the past for them. I've tried to make them interesting, though not quite as eye-opening as one youth pastor's first line, "Sex is great!"
Anyway, I think I have a title for my message: It's Howdy Duty Time. (Okay...Am I the only one here who remembers Howdy Doody?) I might start with a video of the show's opening song, asking them to join in. While they're trying to figure out what's going on, I'll tell them about Ecc 12:13, Acts 23:1 and my favorite duty verse, Luke 17:10.

I think that I figured it out, but waaaay too much thinking to get there.
I like the K.I.S.S. Method:
"Right two-five-zero. Fire for Effect."
(In other words, just tell me where the target is, and what to do to it.)

Re: February 2024 Thread
Gee, maybe the feds can get off the case of those who they are tracking, just because they do certain things...like buy Bibles.
Mentally-disturbed people, also known as transgenders, are increasingly being uncovered as terrorist mass-shooters. The latest was yesterday at Joel Osteen's mega-church. Two off-duty cops permanently ended the threat. Watch for this story to go into the memory hole, like the others. Doesn't meet the media's narrative.

Re: February 2024 Thread
Read a couple of columns lately from "experts" saying it's time to bring the military draft back. I see a big problem. As I recall, the percentage of young American males that don't even qualify for military service is now around 70%. Puts the burden on a smaller percentage who managed to stay in shape, mentally, physically and morally. The 4F Boards will have a lot of long nights trying to keep up with the paperwork.
The men of ancient Sparta had to be ready for war until their 60th birthday. Don't think they had deferments.

The Super Bowl ad we should have seen. If the creator of this video started a Go Fund Me to put it on next year, I'd contribute for sure.

The only residents of Sparta who were considered as "Citizens" and allowed to vote & hold other rights of citizenship were males that were members of the Defense Forces.
There were "Residents", who were allowed to work, buy, sell, & be protected by the government.
Below them were "Slaves", who were generally owned by the households of "Citizens", so that the Citizens had the time to train (1/2 day, every day), after their initial time in full-time military service was complete.
