September 2022 Thread
Is it possible that summer is almost over? Out here we were blessed with a smoke-free season right up to a couple of days ago. A fire started on the mountain right next to town, where a neighborhood goes part way up. A bit unnerving to watch a jet tanker with chemicals fly so low to drop its load. They are professionals indeed.

The Twilight Zone lives on. In the most recent episodes...
California's governor announced that they are phasing out the sale of new gasoline-powered cars. By 2035, all new cars in that state must be battery-powered. But right now, Californians are being told not to use electricity between 5-9 pm, to avoid rolling brownouts. How are they going to have enough power for millions of new electric cars?
And over in West Virginia, a D.C. tourist's battery-powered car ran out of juice in the middle of nowhere. Lucky for him, there was a mining operation nearby. Some coal mine workers came to the rescue and pushed his car to the mine's gate, where he was allowed to plug into the power.
The Green New Deal is going to do nothing but force the printing of trillions of dollars of more greenbacks, needed to buoy up our economy and delay the inevitable (Really) Great Depression.

Why couldn't they just lend him a fuel can, to go get some extra electricity for the car?

He just might have fallen for it. Reminds me of a couple of sea-going pranks on new sailors. Engineers would give a fireman a bucket and say, "Go and get me a bucket of shore steam." And seasoned deck guys would tell a newbie to go to the bosun's locker for 6 fathoms of shore line.

I worked at the Parachute Shop at Fort Hood for a few years. When you pack a parachute, it is so fluffy that you throw a couple of "shot bags" onto the folded 'chute, so that it stays put, until you stuff it into the deployment container. A shot bag is a snake-shaped bag, about 18 inches long, filled with lead shot. You remove the shot bags as you stuff the parachute into the deployment bag, but if you miss one, it might catch the jumper's attention, but it won't kill him.
We also packed the inflatable water wings for pilots and parachutists that were going to be over water. When you pulled a lanyard on each side of the harness, it used CO2 cartridges to inflate two large banana-shaped air bladders that would keep you afloat.
So we sent a new guy to go down to depot maintenance supply to get us some more inflatable lead weights.

Re: September 2022 Thread
Last Friday our church had a free BBQ and movie night. At least 20 unchurched people came...and half of them showed up Sunday morning, too. Now, we've done this before, but the unchurched never came. What was different?
We placed a Facebook ad, zeroing in on those who live within 5 miles of our church, and who were within 18-50 years old. We found that over 5500 people saw the ad. What did it cost us? Oh, about 15 bucks.
What could YOU advertise?

In 2 weeks, our local community has its Founders Day celebration in the city park. We have reserved a location for a table for promoting Royal Rangers and our Funeral Honor Guard.
We will display shooting awards and show tintype photos of the boys in Civil War uniforms.
Stay tuned for results.

Re: September 2022 Thread
After my brother's death, his wife needed to sell the house. But it needed SO much work, inside and out, and she's disabled - and broke. By the time my wife and I finished it all and the place was listed, the market had cooled off. No thanks to a lazy agent, but through word of mouth, someone called and stopped by the house yesterday. Two hours later, an offer was made and accepted.
(Cue the happy Snoopy dance)
Thank you, Jesus.

Housing mrket is tanking fast. You were fortunate to get that sold
Work is keeping me busy. Lots of fires to put out.
Heading back on to nights next week to cover another vacation. Some times it stinks to be the only extra person who can drive semi. But they pay me extra for nights & I get to raid the out of date food at the warehouse. So its not all bad

You know, it all depends on where you are buying.
My son decided to move from Milwaukee to Florence, Alabama (about 50 miles from our place). He did a bunch of internet and realtor searches, then came down here for a week. Houses were literally closing between the time that he made viewing appointments and when he was going to arrive to see the places.
He eventually got a nice place, but the realtor said that she believed that someone else, who had seen the place earlier that day, was probably also going to submit an offer. My boy got his offer accepted by bidding $1,000.00 OVER asking price.
After his offer was accepted, the other bidder contacted my son and offered him money to withdraw his bid (I think that might be illegal).
--------
Also, the mortgage interest rate jumped 3/4% between the time that he locked in the loan and when he closed.
