Firearms Safety Materials Empty Firearms Safety Materials

Post by Claymore March 11th 2014, 10:45 pm

OK. Background:

I put my Rangers through the Firearms Safety Merit a couple of years ago.

The "Firearms Safety Merit" Requirements say that the boys are to "Successfully complete the Royal Rangers Firearm Safety Merit Course or another approved Daisy Shooting Education course, such as Jaycees, 4-H, etc. "

We used the Royal Rangers Firearm Safety Merit Course from Royal Ranger Merit Book.

But it looks like that book is no longer available through GPH, and I do not see where leaders can access that lesson on-line.

It doesn't hurt me, because I still have my books, but would this take a resource away from a commander (like a new guy) who doesn't have the old books?

Reason that I am bringing this up, is that I'm looking at starting a new course and opening it to other Outposts in the District, and just trying to mentally organize the course & materials.

Isn't blue firearms safety merit guide still in the DR track of tracclub?

Maybe that's the problem. We are just down to a few boys, and we are only enrolled in the A/R Trac.

Like I said, I have the written materials from the (no longer available) books. But I didn't know where a Commander without the books would find the full Program of Instruction.

I guess that 'splains it. As the boys got older, we dropped our subscription to the D/R Trac.

Firearms Safety Materials Empty Re: Firearms Safety Materials

Post by Claymore March 12th 2014, 11:18 pm

Personally, I'm good, Tom & Chris.

I was just thinking of coordinating a training session with District, and how Commanders of other Outposts could get the training materials prior to class.

Our Outpost is doing the Field Day for the Shotgun Merit this Saturday.  If it works out, I may try to offer a Friday/Saturday course for other Outposts, & have them overnight in our Fellowship Hall.  But they need the Basic Firearms Safety Course prior to doing the Shotgun Course.

I need to run this all by our Pastor, but I'm just trying to use the "Backward Planning Process".  (Envision the Goal, first.  Then plan your steps to get there.)

The Daisey Avante Course is quite good.  I think that it is 10 One-Hour Classes.

Tom, I just looked at your download, and it is the same material as I used with our boys. But I was using the regular books.

Why is it missing from tracclub?

I've added to the ppt that was posted on rangerdepot.com.

Firearms Safety Materials Empty Re: Firearms Safety Materials

Post by Claymore March 12th 2014, 11:29 pm

They're 2 different Programs of Instruction:  Similar, but different; but either fulfills the requirement for Firearms Safety, as well as courses offered by 4H or Jaycees.

The Daisey Avante Course is VERY similar to a full Hunter's Ed class.  The Royal Ranger POI is a little more basic (I don't have first-hand experience with the other two).

For example, if you look at the Daisey Avante course, it goes into a lot of class time talking about shotguns, chokes, shot sizes, patterns, leads, sectors of fire, etc.

We touched on those, but since our "Firearms Safety" was a prelude to BB-Gun Marksmanship, we didn't spend hours dwelling on those materials.

However, since the boys are now doing an NRA Shotgun Safety Course, they are getting all of that, plus shooting trap, slugs, and hauling a gun into an elevated hunting stand on Field Day.

Firearms Safety Materials Empty Re: Firearms Safety Materials

Post by strods March 13th 2014, 10:17 am

I knew you would be fine Claymore, but I wanted to post the link so others reading this thread would be able to access the info.
I called Daisey a year back to order the paper and actually told me if I waited a month or so it would be online and that is their new standard.

As for TracClub, well officially it is not RR material so they are likely trying to avoid legal trouble. If you look up the Firearm safety, it refers to several programs so likely wants to give Outposts choices.

Well, at least they still have the merits.

I found the information to be a bit vague, at first (read the Firearms Safety Merit Requirements, and it refers you to "An Approved Course"). But once you find your path & get going, it goes pretty well.

By the way, how close are your boys to getting their Pro-Marksman Medals?

Firearms Safety Materials Empty Re: Firearms Safety Materials

Post by Phillip Gross January 5th 2016, 4:40 am

We're using the Avanti course for the merit. The course will actually have them firing BB guns and I'm looking into what to buy. The Daisy national competition for 5m uses the Model 499B Champion. I'm going to contact Daisy today because their website says that non-profits may be able to get special pricing.

Apparently the 499 is a muzzle loaded single shot, lever action rifle. It has adjustable rear sight and changeable front aperture pin. I watched a YouTube review of it and it looks good because of it's consistency. The reviewer used a chronograph and found it to stay within 1fps shot after shot. Anyone have personal experience with this rifle?

I know I could get away with using a less expensive rifle, but I think I'd like to have the 499's for the boys. If we have some sharp shooters, I'd like them to be able to compete.

We used the 499 at Ranger Camp this past summer. Solid little unit. My son found it a bit heavy but he is a little bit small for a 9 yr old.

I'll probably have some daisy bucks for the younger boys. That'll hopefully help them not get frustrated.

While Ubering last night I come across a second firearms training store front in neighboring downtown Elyria. This one advertised its run by an NRA counselor/instructor. I've been interested in getting certified to teach.

That sounds like something you should do. You obviously have a passion for firearms, so you should train yourself on it and start making a little side cash. I'll bet a Saturday class with 10 people getting their carry permit would make some good money.

Thanks Philip. If I do teach it won't be as expensive as some charge. Cheapest I've seen is $69 per student for 8 hr class. Rounded off thats $700 minus the $200 for books $500 gross before tax.

I should thank Obama for my renewed interest and passion for firearms and recent 2A attacks.
