Merit Camps
We'll be doing our first merit camp the first weekend in October. We've got a few new boys who've never done the Tool Craft merit so we're going to make that our first one. Planning on doing camps in close proximity to the outpost, so we don't spend time traveling to and from the site, maybe every month or two.
The merit camps will serve multiple funtions. They'll get boys up to speed who've never done the particular merit and refresh boys who have. They'll also give us more camp outs to get out in the woods so the boys who either don't have backpacking gear, or who don't like/want to backpack can camp. Our outpost has really embraced backpacking, but I'm aware that some kids either can't or don't want to backpack, so I think these camps will be good.

Re: Merit Camps
Good idea.
Be prepared for surprises. We had one boy who brought an entire Queen-Size Blowup Bed. Maybe something like making them pack their gear in 100 feet would help.
