Ordered Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" from Amazon and it came in today. Everyone says the information can be used in many arenas in life. Hoping to gain some increased business insight. Anyone read it before?

I think that I had mentioned this before, but one of my favorite "management" books is FM 22-100 (Military Leadership, 1973 edition; before the Defense Department got all Politically Correct).
Outstanding book on Decision Making and working with peers & subordinates (including kids).

I like the one that says do on to others as you would have them do unto you. Makes it simple. It has worked wonders for me over the years. I think it will even work in eternity. Grin.

Re: December Greetings, Merry Christmas
That is what makes it a better rule it's not predicated on others and how they treat you.
I have been through so many people pro seminars I could teach the course. Yet I have seen it all fall in on itself if a few varibles are missing.
Golden rule my daily rule. Is a Holy Spirit rule. It's power is beyond man and man's puny attemps at understanding the psyco of others. Self is a ugly thing.
at&t has a supervisors manual. It tells the 1st line supervisos how to deal with things. Sure there are rules for dealing with folks. Yet the best one is the Golden Rule.

Re: December Greetings, Merry Christmas
I think that's "walk softly and carry a big stick".
I think you can live by the Golden Rule and be wise in business without contradiction. Many times we find out that things we thought weren't "fair" turn out to be totally fair and right once we have a more mature POV on the situation. So would an immature person yelling "golden rule" (in all the sincerity they posses) about a situation trump true wisdom? Nope.
I'll give an overly simplified and silly example to illustrate my point. Let's say my child never spanks my butt, as they shouldn't. Does that mean I can't spank theirs when they've done something to deserve it? No. My wisdom trumps their golden rule in that particular situation.

Re: December Greetings, Merry Christmas
I take the golden rule as a proverb which is generality. If you treat others well they will treat you well. Its not an absolute. People have the choice to repay a good deed with evil or take advantage of you. Wisdom to know the difference is important.

I think the quote about walking softly is exactly what the golden rule is about.

My wife got one of those ultralight style jackets for me for backpacking. It's kind of ironic though because it's a "Save the Duck" brand which touts the lack of any animal products used in their construction. It is warm though, not that we need it right now in SC!
Looking forward to getting back to the mountains.

Re: December Greetings, Merry Christmas
Golden rule is treat others as you would want others to treat you. It's not dependent on them treating you badly. It's dependent on you treating them as you wish to be treated.
It's not really that hard. Give someone a good job well done and in the time frame you discussed. "let your yes be yes and your no be no" Treat them fairly. They will return back to you.
I have had some bosses, pastors, leaders, treat me very badly. Thankfully I have always left them wishing they still had me on their team. Golden rule.
When folk treat me badly on a job. Hateful and mean. I can treat them kindly using the Golden rule. Yet there are some that will have none of that. Those folks I just walk away from.
It works for me and works well. In leadership. It works the same way with your people you are organizing. Treat them like you wish to be treated. My experience in leadership is 300 and under and on a weekely basis 120 and under for years at a time and it's all been volunteer. Yet the rule works. Just treat them as you wish to be treated.

Re: December Greetings, Merry Christmas
Speaking of new years what's everyone's plans?
I will be working 1-10pm and going out to the bars right away.........to do Uber of course Last Sat I got a 27 min ride that was $95 in a 3.0x surge zone of Cleveland downtown. My cut for that drive was $75. Overall made $100 after gas which was $29/hr in 3.5 hrs of time. I am banking Thurs will see some good surges big time.

Re: December Greetings, Merry Christmas
Speaking of money...hey, Claymore! You're probably collecting Social Security. I was talking with a retired electrician as he was working in the youth center today. I did a double-take when he said he and his wife were BOTH collecting SS checks. I didn't think that was allowed, because I've long heard how some older couples were shacking up, but not getting married, because their SS income would go down. Have I been wrong all these years?

Re: December Greetings, Merry Christmas
As long as both persons worked and contributed to Social Security, they are each entitled to their retirement under the System.
Now, when this gets sticky is when the Wife is under the Husband's Social Security:
My father was a farmer, and so the primary farm income was in his name. My mother was primarily a housewife, but she did receive some social security in retirement.
Dad's Social Security was around $1,600.00 per month, and Mom's was about $800.00 per month.
When Dad died, they stopped his payments, but bumped Mom's up to the $1,600.00 amount. I think that the actual fraud would come to play, if two widowed spouses (collecting a higher amount for their deceased partners) lived together, because one or both may revert back to their original benefits level when married.
