Re: Operating Systems Talk
Well, I have a new computer sitting on the floor of my study.
I hooked it up, & it had Windows 8 on it, which I absolutely HATE!!!! I don't want my computer to look like an IPad; I don't want my computer to look like a Cell-Phone. I want it to look like a COMPUTER: a Word-Processor that works on the Internet. (Did I mention that I don't like it?)
I took it back to Best Buy, and they said that all of their computers only had W-8, however, the Sales Tech showed me a program called "Start 8" that seemed to take care of some of the issues.
I brought it back home, and it has been sitting on the floor in the box since April or May.
Oh, hey, did I mention that I didn't like it?

Re: Operating Systems Talk
I'm glad I'm not the only one who HATES 8!!
I think sometimes I'd like to attach my new laptop to a rocket, blast it off, and tell the boys that's how we deal with evil in our lives.
And that's how you stay on topic WHILE complaining. Especially since I still can't get into Complainers Corner....

Re: Operating Systems Talk
I saw your fine print. I helped my father inlaw by a new windows 8. While I like parts of it I cant get used to using the new start screen. I prefer to use the desktop. There must be a way to change it back to standard. I know even most recent versions still include the progman.exe which is the win 3.1 GUI shell.
I had to hunt for the control panel. To keep on topic I agree a rocket launch is very tempting. I do love the speed of startup and shutdown. I had to create a command line shortcut to decrease the steps needed for shutdown. I had to sign out and then shutdown.

Re: Operating Systems Talk
I don't think that I've ever owned an Apple Computer.
But I might seriously consider it, if they pay better attention to "us" than HP, Micorsoft, Dell, etc.

Re: Operating Systems Talk
HP and Dell are manufactures of hardware while Microsoft has a monopoly on operating systems for IBM clones aka PC's. Touch screens are the newest thing for the current generation. While I use my ipod touch more than my laptop it is essentially an iphone and a smaller version of the ipads but I like my Windows to be Windows... To keep it on topic the speed of the new desktop is like a rocket!

I will grant the virtual monopoly of MS though, espically with all the problems in software.

Re: Operating Systems Talk
Many of us had our first exposure to a desktop computer via Apple Corp. In the early '80s they donated a lot of their Apple IIe's to schools. It was a smart move. Now apple's branding is so ingrained into the educational system they will never lose that market. There are some advantages and disadvantages to both architectures.
The new Win 8 start menu is for many. I can definitely appreciate upgrading Windows to be touch screen compatible but give us a "Classic View" like previous versions. Does anyone remember the Windows 3.1 or 3.11 for work-groups? All future versions still have a program manager which was the windows GUI shell that worked off of DOS 6.x. You may still find it if you search your windows folder for progman.exe and double click it. Windows 95 was a radical departure from that but it was an improvement for sure. I got my first Acer computer in '94 and I learned DOS well when for whatever reason I lost my OS and had to reformat using DOS and Windows Disc. Out of my college class in 2002 only 2 persons including myself were masters in DOS Command line codes.
I like the iPod touch. I think its more handy than a laptop and I can throw it in my pocket. I use it more often and it has more apps. I'm not likely to buy-in to the apple desktop and laptops because of sheer cost of hardware, OS, and software. I may upgrade in the future to ipad or ipad mini since I can import all my Ios apps from the itouch handheld.
To use a gun analogy Apple is like Remington Arms if it breaks you gotta go to them to get parts and help. IBM architecture or clones are like AR-15's. Not as shiny as an Apple but way more customizable with parts, hardware, software made by many vendors thus creating competition and driving down prices. Apple is a closed system they control the vertical and the horizontal... (The Outer Limits)
I worked for CompUSA in 2001-2003 and I asked the Apple rep why they charge so much for their stuff when so little at the time was available for it. He said that Apple for the trendy people that want to be a part of a select elite. Basically, Apple is like Starbucks of Computers. Pay 4x's higher for a gas station coffee so you can be one of the cool trendy elite. Both have corporate logos with some disturbing symbolism.
Has anyone tried Linux or other open source OS's?

Re: Operating Systems Talk
My experience working with dsl lines for most all operating systems. If your used to it you love it. If it's new to you and you are trying to get something done with it and don't know how... you hate it.

Re: Operating Systems Talk
It struck me that this very statement pretty much sums up RR. For someone coming in recently, like me, this is the only "operating system" I know of. I see things that could be better, but I don't have the frustration that others might who are coming to the new OS from the old OS.Mark Jones wrote:... If your used to it you love it. Like Claymore mentioned about uniforms and curriculum changing after you've already invested in the older stuff... Just like having software that you really like, or at least used to, not working with the new OS.
I know this is probably overly simplifying matters, and I'm sure this is somewhat of a hijack, but it is just very clear to me why there's a lot of frustration at times around here. I understood it cognitively before, but now that I have a current frustration, Windows 8, I have better understanding!
Now it's just a matter of time to see if the new OS will or won't pan out in the long run. And don't forget that BETA was better than VHS and mini-discs were better than CDs, but for one reason or another didn't catch on as well. Will Windows 8 eventually catch on as people work with it more??? Who knows.

Re: Operating Systems Talk
Better is relatively defined word. Beta was superior quality but VHS was superior in the amount of recording time and cost effective in that you could use 3 VHS tapes to one Beta.
DVD is way better than CD, bluray better than dvd. Once it went digital it was better each time.
Now you know Philip why they call it Royal Rangers 2.0, old training ribbons are legacy training awards, and so on.
To keep on topic new people and kids who are apple nuts will love it. I felt lost but now I understand better.

Re: Operating Systems Talk
Microsoft's attitude putting out Windows 8
vs
Doug Marsh's attitude putting out R/R 2.0
And if you want what they offer, each is pretty-much the only game in town.
Phillip, you've pretty-much hit the nail on the head.
(I just wish that I could purchase a $4.95 program to keep what I liked about the old System.)

Ya know at first I thought you were saying that you didn't have $4.95 for Start8...
There's enough room in Royal Rangers for us legacy Rangers whether TPTB want it or not.

Re: Operating Systems Talk
Don't forget how MS dumped Millennium Edition and released XP in 2001. ME was an awful OS. So maybe use Start8 till Windows 9 upgrade is released to fix what everyone hates.

Re: Operating Systems Talk
True that! I guess when it comes to various OS's, we need to remember that whatever is true and good will last, and whatever is false or bad will pass. The waiting it out part stinks, but it'll eventually happen. From the main point of this life, God vs Satan, all the way down to Windows 8, and everything else in between. I guess that only leaves our attitudes concerning the issues for us to deal with. As the saying goes, life is only 10% what happens to you and 90% what you make of it. I can either complain about Windows 8 and never see ANY good in it, or learn the system, make a few changes to fit my style, and get some good use out of it.

Re: Operating Systems Talk
Since I didn't specify "computer operating systems talk" then any OS is fair game since Royal Rangers is using tech nomenclature to define its new operating methods.
Regards to Windows 8 being similar to RR2.0 is accurate. MS is trying to take a bite out of the Apple market by looking like them. Thing is Windows PC's weren't marketed to people that need to feel special by being in a closed system. Its like lipstick on a pig. Its still a pig. Same way with Royal Rangers is we're still using camping as a means to get together for pow wows with throwing a lot of makeup on to make us appeal to non campers. Like a girl going on a date. The guy liked her wthout makeup but she feels like she needs it.

Re: Operating Systems Talk
I completely agree with both examples... except the girl on a date part. When it comes to lipstick, the redder the better! But yes, it is frustrating when a product or service is trying to re-brand itself to the chagrin of it's faithful. I would also point to Circuit City as an unfortunate example of a company trying to compete by leaving it's roots. I worked there before it tried to become a Best Buy knock off. Could they have stayed in business by staying true to their original business model, or would they have gone under anyway? Who knows, but we do know that trying to be another Best Buy didn't work out.RRCmdrBennett wrote:Since I didn't specify "computer operating systems talk" then any OS is fair game since Royal Rangers is using tech nomenclature to define its new operating methods.

I'm getting used to Windows 8 and might not even get the Start8 program. I now know how to navigate it even without a touch screen model. I DO wish the salesman had explained that the new OS was more suited to a touch screen instead of just explaining it as a neat option. I would've sprung for the extra couple hundred...
And as far as RR2.0 is concerned, I've become fairly comfortable with it too, especially since I wasn't involved as a leader before the switch. I don't see myself as someone beating the 2.0 drum, or as an anti-2.0er. I'm just a new user who is having a great time with the program.

Re: Operating Systems Talk
The point I was driving at with a girl and makeup is a lot of the RR2.0 dressing up Royal Rangers to be more appealing to others through superficial means. The rest of us loved Royal Rangers naturally the way it was. Maybe the analogy works for me well since I don't find a lot of makeup attractive.
