Re: NRA and Conceal Carry Weapon Permit (CCW/OC)
The first semiautomatic pistols that our Department went to after revolvers were the 5906/6906 series. Uniform Officers carried the 5906, while Detectives had the 6906.
The 5906 weighs 38.3 ounces, and the 6906 weighs 26 ounces. That's a 30% difference! (Actually, a 47% difference, if you use the weight of the 6906 as your Baseline.)
While neither pistol is a "Match" gun, we found that the 6906 tended to be more accurate, even though it had a shorter barrel & slide. I'm guessing that it was due to slightly better lockup.
The only true downsides to the 6906 tended to be that it is not recommended for hot +P ammunition; if you carried it a lot, the finish on the aluminum alloy lower receiver would wear off (while the 5906 is Stainless Steel all the way to the bone); and it held 2 rounds less than the 5906.

Yep. Verified. At least some of Beretta's new facilities are going to be built in Tennessee.
Now after Governor Cuomo's idiotic remarks about Conservatives not being welcome in New York, we need to get Remington to move from Ilion, New York to Mississippi.

No.

Well, 'bout time.
I am quite surprised that the Ninth Circuit Court made a rather Common-Sense Ruling, for a change.

Hope this creates a ripple effect and MD is found unconstitutional as well.

Supreme court may hear appeal
http://www.shotgunnews.com/2014/02/14/ninth-circuit-victory-end-beginning/
The SCOTUS may hear the appeal of San Diego county, CA if they decide to appeal. Can you imagine the egg on Obama and Feinstein's face if the SCOTUS rules all circuits must become "shall issue". Do you think they'll risk it?

XDm 9mm 19rnd Mag not Locking Slide
If you remember awhile ago I mentioned I had two extended 19 round mags that were not locking back on last round. The original extended and original compact mags both locked back fine.
I got around to trying to work on the issue again. The bottom of the original two mags say, "Springfield Armory XDm 9mm 19rd". The two store bought extended mags say all that but omit the XDm. Odd difference I guess. I was able to sometimes get the slide to lock on these two mags when I would jerk the slide a certain way. Casually pulling the slide back wouldn't do it. I did some research on www.xdtalk.com forums and sure enough others had the same issue. I took the one suggestion to dismantle the mags and stretch the springs out. I noticed the feed ramp looked a little lower than the good mags I have. I reassembled and lo and behold they both lock back on even the easiest of pull backs every time!

I like it when a simple modification fixes the problem. I like it better when everything works properly out of the box, but hey Jack, this is life and things don't work perfectly all that often!

My brother inlaw did the same thing to the two GI metal mags I bought for the AR-15. The mags worked fine out of the box until end of last year. I didn't have any FTE or FTL rounds. My brother inlaw said stretching the springs out is common practice in the battlefield to maintain mags.Phillip Gross wrote:I like it when a simple modification fixes the problem. Re: NRA and Conceal Carry Weapon Permit (CCW/OC)
S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G the magazine spring is not a good thing. It may ruin the temper in the spring. I would definitely not carry these magazines for Critical Use, until the springs are replaced.
The first thing that I would have done is to replace the Followers of the magazines. There is a good chance that the little "Step" that engages the Slide Stop of your Pistol is not within Spec.
MidwayUSA may have springs & followers, or you may have to go to Springfield Armory for the parts.

Why did my vet brother inlaw say they did that in Iraq?
I don't believe the two mags were off brand but not absolutely certain. I don't recall anything else besides Springfield Armory printed on the packages. I'm going to the range this week and I'll test them. I use the one that shipped with it from factory for carry use.

Being a Combat Veteran gives you experience, but does not necessarily make you a Specialist. He's got 4 years of working with weapons. Between Army Infantry, Special Forces, Drill Sergeant, Police Armorer, Police Firearms Instructor, and NRA Firearms Instructor, I have 43 years of experience.
That's kind-of like telling a Brain Surgeon, "My Brother-in-Law is a Country Doctor, and he knows how to repair my Brain Aneurysm...."

I'm not insulting you. I value your advice on firearms very highly. Maybe its something new the Army has been teaching lately.
Thats what the army taught him. We'll see how the mags do Thurs at the range.

Re: NRA and Conceal Carry Weapon Permit (CCW/OC)
What a bunch of soldiers do in the field is not necessarily "what the Army taught".
Magazine springs are set at a certain number of coils and length and then they are heat tempered at that length.
If you stretch a magazine spring out, you run the risk of causing metal fatigue, because the spring was not designed to go in that direction (like bending a book cover backwards).
According to metalergists, if you want to make a magazine spring longer (without damaging it) you must first anneal it (heat it until cherry red and cool slowly) and then heat & temper it. This must be done in a controlled environment.
Don't take my word for it. Do Google Search on "stretching magazine springs".
But if you want to use your s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d magazine springs for self defense and critical use, feel free to do so.
It will probably not fail.
Probably.
