Re: November Thread
If there's anyone who wants a good girls scouting ministry at your church, y'all should really look into American Heritage Girls. It's the closest thing to what Missionettes used to be. IIRC, I think AHG started in Ohio and I think that's where their national HQ is.RRCmdrBennett wrote:Phillip Gross wrote:What would y'all do on Wednesday nights?
Nothing on Wed nights except the church runs a coed pchildren's church called "Discovery land" since M'ettes went under. We moved to 6:30pm to keep Royal Rangers alive but most boys don't arrive till 6:45 or later basically its just games and babysitting. Moving to Sun at 5-5:15 pm start time will give us almost 1.5hrs back to really do Royal Rangers for Discovery on up. If we get more manpower or lady power we'll restart RK. For now its 3rd grade on up. It'll do several good things I hope: no youth conflict for time, give us over an hr to do a real meeting, move to a non-school day (less hype from a day at school), possibly get more help.

Re: November Thread
Only issue with that is the keeping of traditionL paradigm of boys in Royal Rangers and girls separate puts us back where we were before the dissolution of M'ettes. One big issue was not enough woman power available. With coed ministry takes less manpower and resources. Donnie and I are diehard core Royal Rangers who had been in it as boys too.

The other issue with a true girl scouting ministry is I know of not 1 let alone 2 women that are enthusiastic outdoorsman.
Philip, do your women love the outdoors? Overall an outdoors-woman is still an anomaly to me.

Re: November Thread
We don't have grizzly Adam women running AHG at our church, but they will take the girls camping once a year for the combined family Car Camp, and we're discussing taking that up to twice per year. Our ladies actually do enjoy camping IF it's at a place that has decent facilities near the campsites. That's fine with me. I missed the first annual family camp because of work, but made this year's. As I mentioned before, I think, while it's totally different than backpacking, I did enjoy it.
They have also done some community outreaches for the homeless in the city. They do a lot of crafts, but the girls loved doing the Archery Merit. AHG doesn't look exactly like RR at our outpost, but it's a lot more active than what the Mpact curriculum had. They also have uniforms and patches to earn for the girls all the way through the program.
Another reason I like it is that while it is faith based, the program really focuses on traditional American values, hence the name. There's a lot of emphasis on core values that made America great, which were simply biblical values that our country once embraced.

Grin. We had 2 of them rappell on past us at Eye of the Needle. They are out there and I see them on the Backpacking trails. That's really the only time you can tell. Other wise they look like a normal everyday woman. So get out there on those trails and you will see them enjoying it as much as we do.
I will agree. Most ladies prefer the comforts of home. The older they get....more so. Goes for guys as well. Go outside and enjoy! We have 20 folks going backpacking this weekend.

I know they are out there but in my personal travels never seen one live only on youtube or my father inlaws hunting videos where they include them to appeal the female segment of the market.

Re: November Thread
Some years ago, my neighbor put up a very nice 7' high chain link fence - all the way around his 2 acres. That had to cost money. He also has 6 big dogs, all of whom bark, snarl or howl. Two wag their tails, another two are harmless, but the German Shepherds are very...um, scary.
Last year, I couldn't take it anymore. So I marched up to the fence...and gave them a little cheese. After more conditioning, they still bark when they see me, but it's just to let me know they want a snack.
Today, I noticed a professionally done sign on the fence. "Do not feed our dogs unless you have written permission, or we will take action." Hmmm. I do know that they called the sheriff once because their other neighbor's kids were petting the dogs. What's wrong with people today?

Any chance we can get that guy to build a fence at our southern border?

Not saying they're right or wrong, but if I was looking at my 7' fence with guard dogs within as my sense of security, then I wouldn't want anyone conditioning them to accept strangers either...joecool wrote:Some years ago, my neighbor put up a very nice 7' high chain link fence - all the way around his 2 acres. Re: November Thread
If only the German Shepherds seemed scary then he really wasn't training all six to be guard dogs.
A neighbor like that would make invite suspicion.

Re: November Thread
Big question was he trying to keep people out or keep people in...?
If I were a sheriff's deputy that setup would get me curious. I'm sure Cleveland's infamous Castro would have loved to have a high fence with dogs.

I didn't suggest violating the 4th amendment over his right to act paranoid and antisocial. No matter what it would raise suspicion. As a neighbor I'd keep my eyes and ears open and alert in case I heard or seen something strange.

I understand that but many people have rifles and weapons in general. I'm sure if the Cleveland cop had investigated the report of a scream from Castro's house those girls and their families would have appreciated it.
