November Thread
Well I had every intention of taking advantage of the extra hour tonight for sleep, but I just ended up staying up later... Oh well.
Do you think they'll ever just stay on regular time and quit with the DST? I don't have a problem with it getting light before 5am and getting dark by 7:30-8pm. Why do we still do it?

Re: November Thread
I actually like DST,but I think that I may be in the minority.
In Alaska during January, it was dark when we had breakfast (in fact, it was dark until 10:00 AM). But you get used to it.
I like the extra hour of light toward the end of the day.
(I know that you may say to just get up an hour earlier during Standard Time, but DST just works for me.)

Re: November Thread
DST is leftover from WWI, when the powers-to-be deemed it necessary for the war effort here in the States. Almost a century old, it has long outlived its usefulness.
If you're going to keep it, give it some utility so people can get behind it. For example, all that daylight early in the morning is just wasted. Adjust the clocks, daily if need be, so that sunrise is always at 8 am. Case closed.

Between innings here. Anybody else watching the World Series tonight? Mets manager (and the first baseman) has to be kicking himself.

No baseball for me on TV. Only baseball I watch is my boys.joecool wrote:Between innings here. Anybody else watching the World Series tonight? Mets manager (and the first baseman) has to be kicking himself.
They're coming along fairly decently. Seth, my second son is tall and lanky, so he's been playing first base and pitching. He's got pretty good for on the mound, but he still hasn't completely gotten the wrist flick down, so his pitching speed isn't what it will be once he learns that. The ball floats to the plate causing most batters to swing early. He has ever thing but the wrist flip, so you see this great wind up, big step foward from the rubber, a big long arm violently swinging forward,... then a ball that floats towards the plate. Throws them off.
Phillip Jr has been catching primarily, but will also take the mound on nights he isn't catching. He's got a nasty pitch. His form is pretty good too, but he keeps his whole hand on the ball, so basically he throws change ups all the time. His pitches race towards the plate and then die, so he gets a fair amount of strikes too. Once he learns how to use two fingers and a thumb and start throwing two four seams and two seams, he'll be a more versatile pitcher.
Buy that's the whole point of fall ball. It gets the boys more experience and ready for spring ball. It's more instructional. For instance, they'll call a balk on a pitcher, but it won't count. It's just to let them know that they just did it, and not to because it'll be a real call in spring ball. Stuff like that.

Re: November Thread
Our waiter at the Japanese restaurant turned out to be a major leaguer back in the day. A utility player who bounced around a bunch of teams for 6 years. In my mind, I was a little skeptical. Later on, he shared that he went homerun crazy in his senior year of college, which is why he got drafted. At 150 pounds, he said some of the MLB bat boys were bigger than him.

Re: November Thread
Plans are underway for Ranger lock-in this Friday. Fun, games, and mexican dinner on the menu. Given our limited time slot on Weds now I suggested firearms and tool certification during the event for next years events and boys are excited to get certified and see some guns and knives. With Pastor's approval we maybe going to a 1 hr early before Sun PM services in January.

Fall is over. Snowing lightly all day, but with the temp dropping, it's now accumulating. It will likely melt in the next day or two, but need to get snow tires on the wife's car soon. When we moved up here, she used to get excited about snowflakes. Not so much now.

Nothing on Wed nights except the church runs a coed pchildren's church called "Discovery land" since M'ettes went under. We moved to 6:30pm to keep Royal Rangers alive but most boys don't arrive till 6:45 or later basically its just games and babysitting. Moving to Sun at 5-5:15 pm start time will give us almost 1.5hrs back to really do Royal Rangers for Discovery on up. If we get more manpower or lady power we'll restart RK. For now its 3rd grade on up. It'll do several good things I hope: no youth conflict for time, give us over an hr to do a real meeting, move to a non-school day (less hype from a day at school), possibly get more help.

Ours (rifle) started 2 weeks ago. Can't have a bunch of hunters up in the mountains too late in the year. Otherwise we'd have to wait until the spring thaw to find out what happened to them. Reminds me of a movie scene (Jeremiah Johnson?) where a tenderfoot stumbled into a frozen mountain man and took his rifle.

I love that scene:
''l, Hatchet Jack...
...being of sound mind
and broken legs...
...do hereby leaveth my bear rifle...
...to whatever finds it.
Lord hope it be a white man.
lt is a good rifle...
...and killed the bear that killed me."

So how-come you're not in the woods rustling up supper?
I could make a whole lot of jerky from an elk quarter.
There was an ammunition company that had a commercial that read:
"..................the best way to turn a Buck into Four Quarters........."
