Discovery Rangers LEADERSHIP Merits Empty Discovery Rangers LEADERSHIP Merits

Yesterday our our outpost did the Leadership 103 in the 'one day' format. We had 6 Discovery Rangers attend, and it went well. This is the 4th Leadership merit i have taught, and I think the activities in this one are pretty good. they link together well with the lessons. The time that is allotted for all of the lessons/games is too long. We Started at 8am and finished the first 4 lessons around 12:30. After lunch, about another hour for service project and done by 2pm. We weren't rushing, but also no need to put the kids to sleep by re-hashing the material.

I have taught 3 of the DR Leadership Merits.
The Rangers liked the games, but I think there is way too much time spent listening to the Commander read. It seems very school-ish

Chris. I agree that it is a little to schoolish. we kept the lessons down to about 15 to 20 minutes each and increased the game - activity time a bit. The boys always have energy for running around!

We tried doing the Leadership merits via the weekly method last fall, but some boys showed up one week, others the next. By the time we were done, only one boy had been there all of the weeks... we ended up doing a make up session on a saturday that almost took as long as if we did the whole thing that day!

A leadership merit might be something you could setup during a campout. In the afternoon you could do a grizzly merit or some other outdoors skills or competition.

Yes, I think that's a great idea. I hate having the boys sitting in a classroom. If the whole thing were done out side, I think it would be much better.
