How can you hijack your own thread??
Yes, we had Judah back in December to round us out to four children. He is a great one to end with because he's such a good baby.

Re: Uniforms and Patches
Had a good commander's meeting this afternoon hammering out different details about our upcoming advancement system. I appreciate the spreadsheet that Strods posted as it really helped give a baseline to work off of. We're trying to come up with a good system that can accommodate both boys who start out in DRs in 3rd grade or those who might join up in middle school. We think we've identified 5 core skill merits that we'll probably never teach during Friday night outpost meetings again. They will need to be taught periodically on a Saturday to facilitate new comers in starting their advancement trail. Meaning the first two ranks will contain those core skills, while the latter ranks will simply require a certain number of acquired skills per rank along with Bible merits, Leadership merits and behavioral observations. I created a form called the "Observed Action Form" (OAF) which will be used for both good or bad behavior observations. To clarify, these forms will only be filled out in more extreme incidents whether good or bad. Boys will be boys, so we're not writing every little issue. We do need to conserve trees.... (see that was a little joke that I added, but it went with the topic. Wink wink)
We have some things to iron out, but I think it's coming along!

Re: Uniforms and Patches
That's a really nice job. You must have an embroidery program.
"Back in the day" the Merit Ribbons were printed.
However;
I think that there are enough of us "Old Schoolers" who would buy those, if they were at a price competitive with the vest patches.

Re: Uniforms and Patches
Yes sir, it's a Brother SE400 that allows you to plug a USB directly into your computer. (Business expense for putting my company logo on shirts.... )
That ribbon was done on material from an old bed sheet I commandeered from the linen closet and is with your run of the mill Coats embroidery thread. I've found some higher quality thread online that I need to order. I also need to find out what cloth would work best for small detail work.
I'm optimistic that with a little effort I'll be able to turn out a decent ribbon.... but we'll see.

Re: Uniforms and Patches
If you look at a military (or present Royal Ranger) ribbon, you will see that it is just a piece of colored "binding tape" pressed over a piece of brass that is shaped like a length of "C-Beam", then with another piece of brass inside of that to pinch the ends of the tape.
If you were doing 10,000 pieces, it could probably be rather reasonable per piece.
If you're doing "Onesies and Twosies", it may be a different story.

I want to say it was around $350-$360 from Wal-Mart. It's a decent machine for someone just starting to dabble in embroidery.

Does anyone know where I can see what the old ribbons looked like? Do we even have the same merits anymore?

Re: Uniforms and Patches
I have plastic blue/white kind. You need a pic?
I think all the olde Advanced Awards were kept when new program farted out nearly 300 merits.

I may be able to help with that. Send an email to outpost90@hotmail.com and I'll see what I can do.
