Re: Windows 8
It could. Yet I do prefer the Larger screen at home. If I get a docking station it would replace my desktop. The surface has replaced my laptop. Which was my fastest computer.
I ordered a 3.0 hub and it will allow all kinds of stuff to be plugged in. External Drive, BlueRay Writer, Monitors, Key boards you name it. Anything the desktop had plugged in will work in it.
It's fast. Boot up time is 4 seconds. It's then ready for anything.

I think we need an emergency intervention for Mark he has been assimilated into the new marketing, paradyne philosophy, and branding of Windows 8...

Personally, its like the utility its very comfortable, rugged, and I don't mind gettingit dirty. The only drawback its not made for cold weather. You need to put on thermal underpants.

Yes you nailed it. Cargo pants. I need to hem them up. I have 2 of the tack shirts.
So now I have gone full circle and yes I still wear my Kahaki's most of the time. GRIN!

Re: Windows 8
I wouldn't mind using them if they were free. Gotta admit cargos are useful in the field. We always wore khakis first of the month and awards cofa not camping. I find utility & tac to be good options for hot/warm weather with all the patches the khaki has it gets attention from others too.

Re: Windows 8
Well, I finally took my own advice.
I had gotten so mad at Windows 8 that I packed the computer back up in the box in May of 2013, and it has remained there.
I got the beast out last night, hooked it up, dropped the $4.99 to download Start8, and my son loaded in an ad-blocker program.
It's not too bad, except that I have to load in Word-Perfect that I purchased for $69.00 (no "Word" or "Word Perfect" came with the machine).
I need it, because all of my R/R Lesson Plans are in Word Perfect.

There are people still using Wordperfect... I haven't heard of wordperfect in a long time.
You pay more for office preloaded. Word viewer is free if you don't need to edit your lessons.

Re: Windows 8
Windows 8.1 is ok. I just ignore the apps part of it and use the desktop part it works just like windows 7.
I haven't used the apps that much. They are there I just don't use them.

Our Police Department had all of our systems loaded with Word Perfect in the 1990's, so many of my old documents (including Training Outlines from that time) are in WP. I even knew how to use the Quick-Keys for DOS.
Now, I'm glad. I would rather pay $69.00 for WP than to buy Word from Microsoft - the company that has given us the Chocolate-Covered Dog-Squeezin: Windows 8.
They even took Solitaire off of Windows 8 (but they're willing to let me buy it back for a user fee). I would rather pay $12.95 for a disk from another company.
(Mess over me in a business deal, and you've made an enemy for life.)
Windows 8: the Obamacare of Operating Systems.

Re: Windows 8
I would liken Win ME to obamacare.
I hadn't heard of solitaire being removed. Why would you buy that old game for $12.95 when there are 1000's of other solitaire games for sell? If you got the old system search for, "sol.exe" copy it and paste it on your new system. Windows 8 is pretty fast just has no way of natively reverting back to a classice look.
I figure governmental agencies might still use wordperfect. Is it still available for private use? Office bundles Word, excel, powerpoint, and one note for under $150. Not a bad price when you buy the hom office bundle. I prefer pdffactory over one note.

Re: Windows 8
After a couple years' of frustration with my old, slow desktop, I bought a new one this fall...with Windows 7. If you look around, you can find 'em, and at clearance prices. I always try to learn from other people's mistakes, rather than make my own. A long look at consumer reviews and expert opinions told me to stay away from #8. I've never been one to chase the latest technology, anyway. My cell phone is "dumb", and it's all I need. (no, you don't have to take advantage of that wide open door )

Re: Windows 8
I don't care to pay for always on internet for a smart phone. I have an ipod touch which connects via wifi and has everything an iphone has. Best thing is I don't have to pay for a data plan. I get all the same apps too. I never got why if you turn off 3G internet access on a smartphone and use wifi only you still have to pay a data plan. My ipod touch uses wifi only and doesn't cost a monthly fee.
Chris's kids asked me why I have separate devices because its cheaper.
Microsoft's naming convention has always been weird. Win 3.1 became 95, 98, ME, XP Home, Vista, 7, and 8. Win 3.11 for workgroups became NT 4.0, Win 2000, XP pro, Vista, 7, and 8. Same way with xbox, xbox 360, and now xbox one. They flip flop from version # to year to a unique name.
I always wait on new technology. You get it cheaper later, they release a better product in subsequent generations, and fewer bugs. Always chasing new tchnology can be a vain pursuit.

Tried it: can't do it.
My wife's computer has Windows 7 with Solitaire. My son does Computer Setup & Diagnosis.
He tried copying the Card Games Package from her computer, & it won't work, because hers is a 32 bit system, and my computer is a 64 bit system.
There are "free patches" out there to download, but we don't trust what hidden bugs may be in them.
I'll just pay the $12.95.
Now, my old computer with all of my firearms information and loading data goes down stairs into the Hard Room and will not be accessible to the Internet.

Re: Windows 8
Also,
The computer offers a link to a download for a "Free" Solitaire Game through the Microsoft Store.
Only Problem...........
It requires that your computer be running on the Internet and linked to Microsoft, in order to run. If your computer is not on the Internet, it will not work.
"Solitaire" means "By Yourself". Why do I need Microsoft to be looking into my computer for me to play "SOLITAIRE"?

You know Microsoft's Bill Gates is a part of the elite pushing a NWO... No man is allowed to be solitary...you will be assimilated and will adapt to service US.
I would buy 3rd party solitaire games much better games than the original solitaire that comes with win 3.1 OS.

Re: Windows 8
After several months of using Windows 8 on a non-touch screen laptop, I've gotten "used to it". At least enough that I didn't want to throw it in the trash every time I sat down to use it.
I've been steadily getting busier with my little company lately to the point that I realized that I needed to be able to do book work more than when I get home. Plus with as busy as I'm getting, book work is the last thing I want to do when I haven't seen the kids all week. SO, I did some web surfing to find out the best tablet to get. For what I need to do, the results pointed to a Windows based OS.
I settled on the Surface Pro 2 with Windows 8.1 (and touch screen of course), and I've gotta say, I love it! The touch interaction makes the whole thing so easy and enjoyable to navigate! I did go back and get the removable keyboard because I found that the on screen keyboard is not good for working...
I don't see myself as much of a techy, but I'm really enjoying this little tool. About the size of a composition notebook with almost everything a full size PC has to offer. I can sit and work on (real) Word and Excel documents one minute, and then walk around with it looking at a full set of blue prints... and specs... and have access to Quickbooks on the server at my office via Remote Desktop. Cool stuff!
But with my luck, now that I'm embracing all this technology, we'll have an EMP strike that makes it all useless...

Re: Windows 8
Crack me up you go from a half full glass to a half empty glass in 5 seconds! Surface pro is desktop, laptop, and tablet all-in-one. Just backup your data to DVD-R since CD/DVD data is burned in rather than stored magnetically. EMP strike should only affect magnetically stored data such as hard disk drives, flash drives, etc.
