First Outpost Level Winter Camp 2016
Before this year began my Number One and I crafted an event schedule. Last year was practically a waste with the new coed program taking the 7-8:30pm slot on Wed and we got leftovers from 6:30-7pm. Which usually ended up being 6:45-7pm if we were lucky. We had a good turnout Sun. Began with pledges, code, motto, meaning of emblem, and opened in prayer. Went over camping merit skills and cold weather in particular to prep for the upcoming February 12-13 winter camp at our local Camp Blessing. We'll have access to a cabin and dining hall with plenty of outside activities.

CABINS?!?!
Good that things are working out at the new time slot. Plan as much as your schedule allows. I truly believe that's what draws in more boys. Activities outside the walls of the church building, whatever they are. Shooting, camping, hiking, etc.

Uh oh... Those might be fightin' words for some...
Speaking of girlie rangers, our American Heritage Girls are holding the third annual Daddy/Daughter dance this Saturday night. It has grown each year and looks like we'll be close to capacity this year.
Maybe we should plan a Mother/Son fishing trip this summer....

Re: First Outpost Level Winter Camp 2016
Reminds me of when we were fishing in Wisconsin, 30 years ago.
My Dad was grilling hamburgers, and served one to my wife. She complained that he had been baiting hooks with night crawlers, and she didn't see him wash his hands.
He took her hamburger, opened the bun, and bored a hole in the middle of the meat with his finger and gave it back to her.
She eventually ate it. He wouldn't give her another hamburger.

Oh, she knew that the more that she showed that it upset her,
the more we would laugh at her about it.

Cabin?.... are they portable?
Is that the same thing as a warming hut? We have those on some of the popular winter routes in the mountains round here.

No these are permanent structures with no heating systems just bunks. My church owns 27 acres and runs a yearly youth camp in July. The cabins have no fireplaces and not sealed airtight either.
To all you all which is all of you all its the first time camping for this batch or new boys. I and my 2IC wanted to try this first to give the boys a taste of a winter outing. Next year will be tent camping.
In home outpost in MD we would rent a cabin that had the amenities in Feb and that would be our outpost campout. We were very active in both sectional and district pow wows and FCF. As a point I will be tent camping myself. I want them to learn from this and next year test what they learned by going tent style.

Re: First Outpost Level Winter Camp 2016
Rats I lost a grand post about Doug Marsh coming down and giving you guys a new Ranger Essentials class on camping in a cabin with a black and white tv... lost it. You guys missed it it was perfection hassling poking and picking on Dan galore.
70 guys camping over night in a cave this Friday night, Rappelling the face of it, smoking jerky at the entrance, treasure hunt, candle light walk to the back of the cave, lights all blow out..pitch black dark... and then...the council fire in the dark. OOOOHHh!
What ever works for you guys. Our FCF winter lockin in the gym was a big success last weekend. I don't live up north where it's really realty cold..so if cabins work go for it. Bring Mr. Buddy it will make it feel like home in there.

I will say. Move those camping events up earlier instead of one a year..try one a month and watch it all take off.

What ever you do. It's good for those boys when to take them outside the walls of the church and spend time with them. It's just good for everyone.
We will have 2 ladies camping in the cave with us men and boys. Find trail ready ladies and the gender issues dissolve.

Re: First Outpost Level Winter Camp 2016
Thanks Mark you're the voice of reason. No excuses but last year with it being full year Discoveryland coed church on weds really put a damper on Royal Rangers ministry. Its basically just me and my 2IC running things week to week with each having two jobs its been difficult. We do have a family camp planned in Summer and many outdoor activities. Its about 1 event per month. Fri night we'll be teaching them how to make tin foil hunters meals too with an outdoor council fire. Oh and practicing fire craft too. Plenty of ruffing it and freeze if you please opportunities.
For the rest of ya'll it will not be the Doug Marsh suite at the Holiday Inn.

You guys are shinning on now! As for me and my groupies we be sleeping in bat gunno tonight!
YES! But first I have to go to the doctor and get her to poke around on me so she will refill my two precriptions that I have taken for 30 years. The little Natizi Gestopo agent won't refill with out seeing me every 2 years.
