Guitar questions for Phil (Only cause I know he plays, anyone can join tho)

Post by Christi on July 30th 2013, 12:05 am

1. How do you have your practice sessions set up? Dylan my teacher says I don't need to learn scales but everything I read online says you do.
2. Do you play acoustic or electric?
3. Can you recommend some christian sites online to get riffs(?) and guitar tips without listening to stuff I don't want or need, ie rock and roll. There seems to be a lot out there. Its kinda overwhelming.
I know there is more but I can't remember right now.
Thanks for your help.

It all depends on your goals. If you want to be able to play rhythm guitar and will be happy playing songs with chords written out over the words where you need to change, then don't worry about scales and music theory. You will be able to play and have a good time, but you'll be what I call a "chord player". Meaning you can only play chord "shapes" as opposed to knowing the ingredients of each chord thereby allowing you to manipulate it to sound how you want by adding, subtracting, or changing a note or two within it.

Think baking. Some people are great at following recipes and therefore can bake really good cakes, cookies, etc. Other people have taken the time to understand what each and every ingredient is and does, so they can adjust recipes to make them truly unique.

So that's why I say it's all what you want out of it. I have been in the "chord player" category for my entire playing life. I lead praise and worship and write songs. Those things can be done without knowing scales and theory, BUT it would be easier with it! I write songs with a lot of trial and error at times trying to figure out what chord needs to be next. A standard chord may sound close, but isn't exactly what's in my heart. If I knew all the ingredients then I could more easily add a "dash" of this or hold back a "sprinkle" of that to find that perfect sound.

I will say that, depending on how much time you have to devote to your practice, it definitely won't hurt anything to learn scales and theory. It's just that the time spent on that might be better spent on building muscle memory in your hands by playing playing playing through your chords. That all depends are where you are developmentally AND what your goals are.

I'd say 99% or more of all guitar players start out developing a good base of chords and then start adding in scales and theory. The problem (if you want to call it that) is that most people stop progressing after attaining that good base of chords. Like I basically did. You can play through songs. You keep learning little variations of chords like all your minors, 7ths, suspendeds, augmenteds, etc and you just.... play songs. And for most people they realize that they're happy and successful with that.

I have both, but primarily play acoustic as that's the style of play I've developed (a rhythm player) over the years. Phillip Jr is currently using my electric to play lead in the band. Because of his young age, and my willingness to experiment, I'm starting him out completely opposite from 99% of guitar players. He's learning all scales and theory first without any chords. My theory is that once learning all the ingredients, he'll be able to bake anything he wants later. We'll see if I'm right in a couple years!

I usually just Google the song title and add "chords" and it'll bring up sites that have people who've figured out the songs and submitted them. Usually check a couple different sites to compare what people have submitted. Some submissions are pretty good, and others not so much.

There aren't a lot of straight "Christian" sites that provide that, but you'll find that there are tons of Christian songs mixed in on secular sites too. Let Google be your friend on that! There is one Christian site that provides actual music, whether guitar chords, guitar tabs (for lead), piano sheet music, etc. called "PraiseCharts". You do have to pay for those chord/tab printouts because they're official renderings compared to submissions by Joe Shmo that might not be 100% right (but are usually plenty good enough).

1. Thanks for your help Phil, for now I will try to focus on what I am doing now and not getting ahead of God....which is what I have a tendency to do Embarassed I wanted to ask you these questions when I found out you played but forgot. Embarassed

2. Your theory for starting out your son sounds like a good idea and makes since to me. Do most lead guitarists play electric and rhythm players play acoustic
3. I think Dylan is training me for both...I have learned some finger picking from him, and I have found some online I can learn too. I really enjoy it.
3. Yesterday afternoon after I sent this off I found a cool site that has strum patterns and tutorials and stuff.
4. Oh.. I wanted to ask.. there is a lot about strengthening the hands and exercises to do that, do they all do pretty much the same thing, I mean is there something in particular to look for ? It seems everyone has their own?
Thanks again and God Bless You.  Guitar

I have an old acoustic guitar in the garage I've plucked at a few times. Just didn't know where to start. My other instrumental experience is trumpet in middle school band.

Yes, I'd rather have your energy and drive than be musically inclined. When it comes down to survival Mark could use a guitar for fire wood...

Then I prolly shouldn't mention Mark could take the strings off for use in primitive snares...just saying.
