Family Matters
Threw a surprise birthday party for my Mom tonight. It was nice having 4 generations under the same roof. That probably doesn't happen too much any more. These days, people have a tendency to move a ways from their roots, in order to get a good job.
Another assisted-living complex opened up this week down the road. It's sad that the tenants can't be with family, like it used to be. Our culture, whether chosen or forced on us, makes it harder to do. When the time comes, though, Mom will be under my roof.

I imagine that we'll be the ones to take care of aging parents with my wife's years of nursing background. Can't see us sending any of them to a nursing home except in the most extreme circumstances where we just cannot provide adequate care.

Re: Family Matters
One nursing home allowed my mother to develop deep bed sores that when debreeded were the size a fist deep.
Another nurse once blamed us for why mom was in the hospital. She made the mistake of touching my shoulder and I lit her up! Got a new nurse out of it. Sometimes meek and mild becomes Tiger. I shocked my one cousin

What a blessing to have a nurse in the family, Phillip. Our daughter-in-law up north is a pediatrics nurse, so that's helpful as well. Not that we ever ask her for free advice or anything. Well, not often anyway.

Re: Family Matters
Anybody ever do research on your family tree? Nearly 20 years ago, I put hundreds of hours into it and made a nice booklet for all my relatives, in time for the first-ever reunion. I was able to trace our ancestral family to a little village in the old country, solved some riddles, and uncovered new mysteries.
I recently decided to get back into it. Tonight I had a huge breakthrough, finding out what happened to twin toddlers who came across with the original family. In a way, it gave me a little peace.

Are you using ancestry dot com?

Re: Family Matters
I've never used the "membership" web sites. My research has always been old-school, slogging through government-maintained records and the like. I also spent a lot of time looking at LDS church microfilm, which is pretty good once you figure out how to find stuff in their vast system.

Your family was LDS? That could be a lot of "lines" to trace...

Re: Family Matters
From what I've heard, the LDS is where most of that ancestry dot Com info comes from. Apparently they keep a LOT of info stored whether the people were LDS or not.
One of my uncles on my dad's side got into that research years ago. According to him, the line back to a Jewish man doesn't go that far back, relative to human history. He was from Germany, but I really don't know how far back. I do know our family immigrated here well before WWII.
It would be interesting to know my full lineage. I don't think I'd have time to do the type of research that you've done, so I'd probably have to pay the fee to one of those services to find out.

Nope. They were Catholic going back at least to 1832, in an area called Silesia. European borders changed so much in the 18th and 19th centuries, but it's now in southern Poland. Coming to America, my family name lost the "Cz" it started with, in favor of "S".

Part of the LDS theology is that they can bring their departed ancestors into their "heaven", whether they were LDS or not. That's why they have such extensive genealogy records. They send missionaries to every part of the globe, making microfilm copies of every record they can find. That includes government files, port documents and parish birth/death/marriage books.
Did I hear someone say a fee? Let me give you my card. Actually, there's been a huge explosion of online resources in the last 2 decades. You may find that others have already done a lot of the grunt work for you. And when you're ready to start, first find the living Gross in your tree who's the historian. Every family has one. My Dad just happened to be it, but his research was badly flawed. Growing up, I was never interested in what he found, but after he died, I inherited his work and resolved to finish it for him.
The first one in my family to serve was my great-uncle Tony. He was a farmer-turned-doughboy in the trenches of France. One day, he was running messages back and forth. When he got back from one run, he found his company decimated due to a gas attack. He himself succumbed to it, but by then the medics were in the area and pulled him out. Purple Heart and respiratory problems for the rest of his life, but he lived into his 80's. I have a real nice picture of him in uniform and got it custom-framed, along with a WWI victory medal I found in an antique shop.
