What Merits Are You Doing? Empty What Merits Are You Doing?

Post by Phillip Gross August 15th 2016, 10:15 pm

Just curious what Skill Merits you're working on. If you took a summer break, what are you kicking off the new year with? If you've been going straight through, what are you working on? What are you thinking of doing next?

Do you have any ideas to make your merits more dynamic and get the boys drawn in and excited? Just figured we could share some ideas that might help each other. I know Strods would make power points a lot for his merits. I'm not really a power point guy, but I like special booklets that expound on the material so the boys can learn it better. He had one for Compass that was pretty good. I printed it out and used it in conjunction with the Ranger material for the merit. The boys seemed to like it.

Postal Matches close down in 10 weeks, so I have to get running.

I have 2 new Rangers who need to get their Basic Firearms Safety, Marksmanship, and BB-Gun Merits.

The older boys can get their Advanced Firearms Safety and Air Rifle Merits.

The boys are also getting Gung-Ho on working toward getting their Academics Merits.

Also, maybe Knife & Hawk, when the weather is cool enough to go outside for longer durations.

The Daisy safety course ran for 8 weeks. How do you rush boys through it without skimming anything for them?

We run it on a week-end, rather than 8 one-hour classes.

We do the firearm safety in a one day session. The boys loved it. I am thinking of starting out with the compassthen letting the patrol decide what they want to do. Keeping in mind that they have to do one of the 3 required merits. I am hoping that they will pick more of the outdoorsy camping ones.

Its' hard to say. We are in summer break no meetings for one month. After we do recruit (refresh of code) we could do almost anything.

I'm finding a few merits that seem to work better as a long day, or a two day event instead of trying to do them week after week. I looked at the First Aid Merit and after my wife (a nurse) read through it, she suggested that it be a one day merit for sure because it would get mired down easily if tried to do over a span of weeks.

Thought about maybe starting with Primitive Snares since we're coming into the fall soon. Maybe we could plan a camp that the boys try to catch their own food.

We do a Primitive Snares, Primitive Shelters and Wilderness survival merits all over one campout. Works great. I teach it all right there. They just don't bring sleeping bags or tents or tarps. Just a few items from a list. No more no less. They enjoy it.

100%

First Aid Merit,j CPR, Etc.  Most boys won't keep the mental thread going for 6 to 8 weeks.  Also, then what to you do to the boys who have made 6 of 8 classes and have not really met the standards for the curriculum?

In lashing and knots, you can kind-of help a boy who has missed a class or two by cramming him up to standards, but that does not apply to life-saving tasks or critical safety subjects, like firearms.

No Classie; no Patchie.

We did the firearms safety merit this past spring in our weekly meetings, but now we have new boys this fall. Looks like we'll be doing a firearms safety merit camp coming up as well as a tool craft merit camp so that the new boys can get up to speed and the other boys can have a refresher.

So what merits have you found that are really good for the weekly meetings? Preferably merits that are more in line with Rangers 1.0 thinking.

I think I'm going to encourage boys to do merits on theor own when it comes to the merits that are more specific to their own likes, such as soccer, baseball, etc. We have boys that could earn some of those merits that a lot of the other boys would not be interested in. I'll probably do what our AHG girls do when a girl earns a merit on her own. They give the girl a short time to do a presentation to the group about the merit they earned and show some of the requirements to the group. This allows the leaders (and kids) to see that they actually did the work and didn't fudge to get a merit.

As I read the Green Merit for Advanced Marksmanship, it looks like if a boy is an Adventure Ranger and has previously completed the Basic Marksmanship Merit, he can attend the class to qualify for the Advanced Marksmanship Merit.

I looked the requirements over for the Green Merit, and they look almost exactly like the basic Marksmanship Merit - maybe held to a bit higher standard.
