Yells Empty Yells

Post by Phillip Gross August 8th 2015, 3:05 pm

School me on outpost yells and such for when we go to Pow Wow. We haven't done any organized camping with other outposts, so I don't really know how to guide my boys to get ready for those types of things. We did a song and some marching chants when I did NRMC and had our group name. Is that basically the same thing for the outpost?

We have an Outpost Motto and an Outpost "Yell".

The Outpost Motto is:
"In the Midst of Adversity, Lies Opportunity"

I try to emphasize to the boys that the more difficult a situation is, the more opportunity they have to excel (this piece of advice is especially handy for Commanders on Difficult Nights).

Our Outpost "Yell" is:
"Rangers Lead the Way"

Every time that the Outpost is called to Attention (like for opening pledges), they are expected to come to Attention and yell this out loudly enough that the Girls' Class and Youth Group down the hall can hear us (with the classroom door closed).

Examples of other mottoes could be:

"We like it here, we love it here, we finally found a home."

or

"Hawk Patrol's the Best Patrol, Allllllllllll the way, hey."

Do you guys also have an outpost standard? Just trying to get us ready for things like Pow Wow so that our boys don't feel like a rag tag outpost.

I always liked that kind of stuff when I was a kid in Rangers. We have just been doing a lot of backpacking style camps instead of "official" type camps, so they haven't been around other outposts. Plus, none of us are former military so we don't bring a lot of that knowledge with us.

Back in Milwaukee, we made an Outpost "Guidon".  A "Guidon" is a moderate-sized flag with a swallow-tail.

Ours was Royal Blue with Gold Crossed Arrows in the middle, and kind-of looked like this:

---------------------------
WI NMI

(Arrows)         28

WLAG
--------------------------

"WI NMI" stood for "Wisconsin/Northern Michigan"

"28" was the Outpost Number

"WLAG" was West Layton Assembly of God.

In our present church at this time, we can't field a patrol that is large enough to justify a Guidon.

Within our outpost meetings we create patrols consisting of everyone from RK's to ER's for when we do games and such. We've kind of slacked on the patrols this past year, but we're planning to resurrect them again. Now they're not "full" patrols, but it helps to build team spirit.

Now I'm wanting to create just one patrol for the entire outpost for when we go on campouts and such. We only let the RK's come when we car camp, or if a parent were to come along. But they never do come on the backpacking trips because it would be too strenuous for them. Heck, we have a couple DR's that don't even come on the backpacking trips we do.

Maybe we'll just create one patrol for the outpost (however many that is) and then have sub-teams, or squads, for our in house activities.

Here is a wild thought.

I had been mentally going over getting a silk-screen setup, making a logo screen, and having T-Shirts available for my Rangers that we would pay about $5.00 each for (rather than $9.95 to $16.00).

[...and if that is a violation of the Charter Agreement, then I will stop Chartering]

Now, consider this:

With a little work, you could come up with a logo for your Guidon/Outpost Flag, and use the same Silk-Screen for your T-Shirts (even marking the Outpost Travel Trailer, Equipment Lockers, etc).

You could even vary the colors, if you wanted to (Blue on the Flag, Gold on T-Shirts, Red on Equipment Chests), as the screen doesn't care what colors you apply to it.

I do like that! We've been talking about making outpost specific t-shirts this year. Thanks!

We just have ours made. We have a design we have used for about 4 years. Now most everyone has several of these shirts so when we go to pow wow...we all look alike .

I have been in a few of the shops that make these..kind of things. It's a very neat business. Precission is key.

Back in SoCal, the district PowWows always had a theme, and you got extra competitive points if you had a song to go with it. One year, the camp had an old West theme. My outpost made cavalry-looking uniforms (jeans with yellow stripes, blue shirts, and yellow bandanas) and marched up to the first night council fire.

We stumbled in, a rag-tag looking outfit, and I was the embarrassed captain. We then sang to the tune of F-Troop, with lyrics about how messed up we were until meeting Jesus. Got better and better-sounding, and then marched crisply to our bench. Later, the district commander told our boys that he had forgotten how fun camps were supposed to be. I still have a big picture of my troop, and get a bit misty-eyed thinking about those soldiers.

OUT-standing Idea.

I really love it. It has Uniqueness, Humor, Participation by the Boys, Organizational Structure (Cavalry Theme), and our Mission (following Jesus) all wrapped up.

Quite a deviation from the "Anti-Military" ("we're not in the Army") Agenda of the Previous Administration.

Well, as former Milwaukee County Deputy District Attorney Robert Donohoo used to say, "Think clean thoughts".

In other words, let's not try to convict him without evidence.

Karl is speaking at our Olympic themed Pow Wow next Friday and Saturday he is part of the pagent where we all walk in with a parade of flags. Our outpost is bringing in Brittan and Russa.

Lots of fun.
