Firearm Responsibility Empty Firearm Responsibility

Post by Phillip Gross November 4th 2017, 11:23 pm

I've shot with my kids as they've grown up, and they've also been through the firearm safety merit. My 14 yr old called me today while my wife and I were working at the store to ask if he could get his AR to send some rounds down range. Of course, momma was like "no way! They're home alone", but I said to him that yes it was fine, but remember that each round is around .30 each... Smile To momma I said, "I've trained him at home and at the outpost. He's responsible"

He sent a couple mags worth down range and then called me again. "Can I get your 6906 and shoot it too?" I said "yes"

So what's the take away? He's been trained. He knows firearm safety. And he's getting into shooting guns, not drugs...

I don't have enough land to just go outside and practice shooting. Not like you and Claymore. Now, if I could convince my wife to turn the basement into a pistol range...

Don't they have laser bullets that turn on when the firing pin hits it? I thought they even had a target board that records where the beam hits and scores you.

Yup, laser tag sounds like fun... lol!

Philip, was any part of you the least been concerned? Btw, I think you did fine.

I'm in the city so I can't fire a sling shot lol!

Firearm Responsibility Empty Re: Firearm Responsibility

Yes, there was concern, but not overwhelming. I recognize the possibilities, but made a conscious decision to allow him to.

Here's the thing, Jr is 14 now. He's worked construction for two summers already and he'll work in our store both when we're there, or gone. He bought a moped with his money and now has transportation. He's doing a lot more "adult" type things at his age than a lot of kids do nowadays. However, there are still some maturity issues here and there. There are things he wants to go and do that I'm holding back on the reigns. We have had some teenager vs parent style confrontations here and there lately. Sometimes it's like communicating with another adult (which is fun to see as a parent), and then other times he acts like a complete idiot. Laughing

I say all that to say that I'm trying to be careful to pick my battles wisely with him. There are things I'm pulling on the reigns with, and cracking down hard if I see something I don't like. So when there's something that I CAN say yes to, I am. Yes, I had concern for his safety and would rather have been there with him, BUT he is growing up and I'm consciously allowing him to spread his wings where I decide it's acceptable.

Does all this make sense? I've observed parents who have no, or barely any rules for their kids. I've also seen parents on the other end of the spectrum who treat their kids like inmates and control every last detail of their lives. IMO, both of those extremes lead to rebellion, so I'm trying to take a balanced approach.
