Well I did something I generally don't do. I bought a tool from Harbor Freight. Most of the time these tools don't last very long. Bushings go out or brushes or there is something too cheap to make them last for more than a few uses.

Ok. So I buy a chain saw sharpener. I looked on YouTube and there are a bunch of guys using them to sharpen there chains.

I figured since we do the woodworking merit a hands on chain sharpening using a file will be a good lesson for sharpening a tool.

I have used a file a bunch of times and I know it needs ground every now and then to keep it cutting straight and effecent as well as the raker teeth need to be ground down.

So that is what we will do this next sunday night. Sharpen chainsaw blades.

Will holler back on how it went. Might even do a video on it.

Any of you guys have one?

Howdy!

I did have one when I was cutting trees more regular back a few years ago. I upgraded eventually and sold it for $20. It worked fine for me the whole time I had it.
I have used a commercial one worth $700. It was much nicer, better made, bigger, and more powerful. But for the weekend worrier, the little HF one works just fine.

That is pretty much the same thing I was seeing on youtube. It's a little cheapo but it works for the weekender. I have 10 chains to sharpen.
I checked with the local place they get 5.88 per chain off the saw to sharpen.

I think the main thing is when it's your chain you will take as little off as is necessary to make it sharp where the 5.88 price it's set it up and whack it off sharp. Some waste a lot of chain from what I have seen on youtube anyway. (that is probably up to the local sharpener like everthing else some are better then others).

Thanks for the reply.

My son in law and I went out to the shop and setup the harbor freight chainsaw sharpener.  I examined the chain. It was in pretty good shape.   Yet I had not sharpened it with the file.   I had in the past filed the teeth about the same on both 30 degree angles.
We did a cut test before and it cut a 4x4 post off ok.

We sharpened the blades on the chain and put it back on. I checked the rakers they were with in speck.

It cut noticibly much faster with no effort.

The first chain we sharpend... the second set of teeth I ground off too much and had to go back and regrind the first set.   I can see how a shop can easily cut them shorter than needed.  The next chain we were very careful not to get too much on either cut of the wheel.

I would also advise to raise this tool up to near chin height so you so you don't have to stoop to see what your doing with out stooooping.

Will make a 1x4 dowel pin adjustment stand so tall or short boys can adjust the tool to see what is going on.

In conclusion.  I think a file is the way to go for in between sharpenings about 5 times then run it through the grinding process.
I think you could only grind a chain a few times before it's shot if your not careful.

We had a good time Sunday night Sharpend 3 blades and also used the Drill Doctor on some really dull bits at the Ranger Annex. Boys seemed to enjoy the sharpening process and learned what was really doing the cutting and what wasn't.

Met two requirements of the Woodworking merit...only problem was youth had a Pizza night and invited all the kids out on sunday night.... I love youth. Let's go hang out and only keep about 3% of our youth doing it. The Barna Numbers don't lie.

Sharpening chains is like keeping boys iron sharpening iron. Put them out in a taste of the world in youth and bam... we only keep 3%. Ounch.

Mark, good report!

Yes, I use to sharpen chains quite a bit with files and a light "dusting" or removing metal. If the saw hit something like a rock or metal, the grinder is needed to get it back straight. Another thing, if one grinds too long on the teeth, it takes out the temper on the teeth, making them softer and would dull quicker. The lightest amount one can remove the quickest with the grinder is best.

I think it will make a good weekend sharpener. I need it at batcave campout before and after and timber trip for resawing wood before and after. Other than that no fireplace...bummer.

I just talked to my sons this past week.

I cut firewood for my secondary wood central heating forced air system, and have a few dull chains laying about the area.

I'm getting your Harbor Freight Sharpener for Christmas.

I would amagine they will have a sharpening fest and gather around and grind up a bunch of chains on new years. Then go out and do a post shoot... most likely will use the chain saw to trim a tree then blast that tree in half. I know..cause I hear stories from down from that area. HA!

I pulled a lead bullet out of one of the trees we resawed on my District Commanders place...asked him how it got there....he laughed who knows around here. We shoot black powder and he hunts squirrels.

Put the chainsaw to use on the freeze if you please. It cut nicel y. Made nice chips of that wet wood. This stuff had been in the water or under water 2 weeks ago. When we got it cut up into 30" logs we stacked it around the campfire on the windy side to act as a reflector fire and to dry it out so it would burn good and hot.

That wind was something else.

The sharpener is 1/3 paid for now.

I'm afraid not.

While not trying to whine about my personal situation..........

My wife's mother went into the Hospital for a month, after taking a bad fall and laying in her home for several hours without medical help.  A week prior to Christmas, the Hospital sent her back to be on Hospice in our home for her remaining time (expected to be between 6 and 12 weeks).

So we had her here in a hospital bed, plus the Family all gathered here at our house for Christmas Day (with all of the cleaning, planning, and after-event cleanup involved in such an affair).

We also had relatives from out-of-State staying with us, visiting her mother in those last days (I counted 12 different guests staying in our house, each for 1-to-4 nights in two weeks).

On December 30, my wife's mother passed away in our house.

That same day, I went to the Doctor and was diagnosed with a kidney stone.  I had a procedure to remove it 7 days later, and was laid up for over a week afterwards.

And because of the hospital procedure, I haven't been able to take any of my arthritis medication (they affect blood platelets), so every time that I take a step, my knees painfully remind me of each mile that I walked carrying an 80-pound Ruck Sack, and every one of those 490 parachute landings that they absorbed.

My wife is the Senior Sibling that lives within 400 miles of this area, so she ended up being the coordinator for the Visitation, and Funeral, as well as being the Primary Executor for handling the Financial Obligations for the Estate.  Right now, we are preparing for a meeting of the Surviving Siblings to be held here at our house at 10:00 AM tomorrow.

So...........

Somehow, I have not gotten around to trying out the new Chain Sharpener.

Well, it's not exactly how I planned my Christmas/New Year Season.

However, I had mentioned to our Pastor that it seems as if God waited until we were able to handle the tasks and times that we had:

Our home was only built within the last three years, and the downstairs was finished-off with sealed floors, painted walls, & dropped tile ceiling, with double French doors in the past year, so that we could get the Medics and her hospital bed in & out.

The driveway wasn't finished around the house, and (10 weeks ago) we just finished $7,000.00 worth of landscaping and driveway, otherwise, there would have been a big mud-hole for the medics and visiting nurses to go through.

We were able to have a separate room with a large archway leading to a "reception area" in the downstairs, so that people could visit my wife's mother, then have an area to sit, have coffee, & relax.

Our pastor took these observations, and the topic of his sermon at the funeral was, "Look What the Lord Has Done!".

Wow. Sorry to hear all of that. I noticed a stint there where you weren't posting. I thought you had gone on vacation again (I remember some time ago when you were MIA for awhile to find out you were traveling, but don't like to give forewarning). Guess I was wrong about that one...

How's the family doing?

Not a problem.

As stated, I didn't want to throw a wet blanket on everyone else's Holidays. We're big kids, and God gave us the resources to get through it.

(Now figure out how you're going to handle the disposition of the house of an 84 year-old woman who didn't do a good job of keeping up maintenance for the past 20 years. It's probably going to cost $20,000.00 to just get it to the point where it could pass a home inspection.)
