Firearm Safety merit resources
To contribute something useful to the forums I found these diagrams. I never figured I find something useful on the BATFE.

Break/hinge action:

The lever action and bolt action diagrams will be useful since I don't own any of those firearm types.

It's not just Canadarangers computer. I can't find anything there, either. The site that comes up says that ATF got a new location.

Re: Firearm Safety merit resources
If you go to the site anyway and search around you'll find those images. Basically they're images of different guns. You can Google images of whatever gun you want to print out if you want too.
I will say that the Avanti program is very good and comes with images to print out showing the differences between shot sizes, shot shells vs bullet cartriges, field of fire, etc. The images are good, but it's fun to bring in shells and cartriges and dissect them in class so the boys can actually see what's inside and how it all works.

Re: Firearm Safety merit resources
Claymore, how would you suggest safely dissecting live rounds?

X-acto Knife generally works better than a cutting torch.

Re: Firearm Safety merit resources
Without the pressure of a chamber I've been told they pop but bullet doesn't go far. Is that true Claymore?

Re: Firearm Safety merit resources
Right.
We spoke about this before. With a metallic cartridge, the biggest danger would be getting brass shrapnel in your hands or eyes.
I saw that with an "out of battery" firing of a Ruger 10-22 that had a worn sear. But I think that a big reason that the victim got shrapnel in his hand (enough for a visit to the emergency room) was that the brass case was about 90% contained in the chamber.
I think (hope) that Phil was talking about disassembling a shotgun shell. This isn't too bad of a procedure.
Use an X-acto Knife or a scalpel.
Hold the rim in your weak hand, and go about 1/3 the distance of the shell and start cutting away from the rim (and powder) and away from your support hand.
If you want, you can CAREFULLY ring the plastic on the shot end.
Now, you can show the lead shot and the shot cup/wad. When you remove the shot cup/wad, it will expose the powder.
Dump out the powder, and you can see the end of the primer.
It works best to dissect a newer plastic shell, as they tend to be thinner than the old ones. I was at a trap range last year, and the owner complained that the ammo companies are making shotgun shells so thin that they can only be reloaded once or twice. We used to get 4 or 5 reloadings out of them.
