Sailboats
Every once in awhile, I'll look around for used sailboats. Last night I came across a "hybrid", part sailboat and part motorboat. It doesn't do either one in an exemplary manner, but it does both well enough, especially if you're not trying to sail the 7 seas. There's a 19' model (MacGregor Power Sailor) for sale about 6 hours away. I've e-mailed the owner a bunch of questions that I need answered before making the trip.
Anybody got any sailing experience out there?

Re: Sailboats
I've been aboard a clipper ship. I wanted to do that advanced award growing up.

Re: Sailboats
Got an e-mail response. He's the 2nd owner of this sailboat. In 20 years, it has only sailed 4 times! Hard to believe, but it does look to be in great shape. If you go on craigslist, you'll find it in "East Idaho - boats - private sellers". My big hiccup right now is that the owner doesn't have a title. Need to check up on that before plunking down any money.
Canyon Ferry Lake is about a half hour away from me. It's a dammed-up portion of the Missouri River and is over 20 miles long.

The link worked fine. Thanks!
That's a really nice looking boat! Looks like some good relaxation potentially in your future.

Well, you know what they say.........................

the day that he buys it...................
and
the day that he sells it."

Re: Sailboats
I suppose that I have no room to speak............
Paying $60.00 per hour to bore holes in the sky can be a rather selfish hobby.
But I'm recovered now;
My wife tells me that I can go back to flying any time that I want to;
She also tells me that I do not want to.

Re: Sailboats
It only costs $60 to hitch a one-way ride on a plane? Or is this the cost to fly your ultralight?

Nope. No sale. Told the guy to work with his state to get a title. Hope he puts in the effort. I'd really like to get the boat.

Cost to rent a Cessna ran between $30.00 and $60.00 per hour (it's hovering between about $50.00 and $60.00, now).
I was able to fly & maintain my ultralight 2-place trainer for about $20.00 to $25.00 per hour.
But then when you amortized the cost of when I lost my $15,000.00 aircraft that I only had about 50 hours of flying time, plus fuel & maintenance, it cost me about $325.00 per hour for that one.

Re: Sailboats
I hope it was insured, or you found some obscure IRS rule that allowed you to write it off.

Re: Sailboats
It was not insured.
However, as an Ultralight Flight Instructor, I was able to write off the loss (less avionics and parts salvaged).

Re: Sailboats
At least boats don't run into apartments like Cessna's do. Yesterday a cessna hit an Akron, OH apt complex.
Boring holes in water, air, paper, or clay pigeons is about fun and building memories. What makes it not selfish is when we share it with others.

Re: Sailboats
Of course, sometimes time alone to reboot can prevent you from going off on people. So there are times when alone time is actually FOR others... which makes it unselfish!

Yes, there is a time and season for all things. Nothing should be done exclusively to excess.
