Re: Merit essays become oral reports
Years back they moved off of that essay stuff and said have the boys do it orally. Show, Tell, Do. I just have them right in their merit steps discussed in classroom.
Almost no writing at all.

You know, we had a fellow representing Tennessee District Royal Rangers come to one of our State Leaders Conferences. He said that a way that HE handles some of the "onerous" written research tasks is to have the boys do it as a "group project". When the boys bring him the written material, he types it up on his lap-top, prints it out, and has each participating boy sign the document.
I ain't saying THAT'S the way to do it, but one of those guys with the Blue Insignia with the Oak Leaves on his collar does it that way.
Re: Merit essays become oral reports
Has the tn guy read making merits interactive pdf or seek and save pdf?

Dan, if that question is to me, I don't understand it.

Re: Merit essays become oral reports
Those documents I mentioned are what officially removes all the merit writing essays from the requirements. The tn guy could eliminate the group writing project and his time transcribing it onto a laptop.

Re: Merit essays become oral reports
I just found the articles & went over them. It appears that they support the point of replacing many of the written requirements with "group projects" or presentations.
I'm not trying to be a nit-picking attorney, but I would put the published list of Merit Requirements as a "Regulation", and the PDF Files that you mentioned as "Articles". A "Regulation" is a "Rule" and an "Article" is an "Opinion".
I agree that some of the merit requirements, as written, appear to be cumbersome and difficult. But, in my opinion, the remedy should be to get off one's backside and modify the merit, rather than to say, "We didn't mean what we wrote".
Again, I'm not fighting the notion of making the merits more attainable. But when you find different standards (depending on where you are looking) it can lead to confusion..........as I have just eloquently demonstrated.

Merit essays become oral reports
Dan, we kind-of got off "chasing rabbits" from about this point. It's good information, but may be better in its own thread.
Something like, "Helping the Boys Make Merit Requirements".
What do you think?

Re: Merit essays become oral reports
I too felt it would be better to just edit those merit requirements. It could be done easy wtih a global search and replace. TRAC Club was designed to make this easy... instead of a major reprint....download the new updated stuff.
It needs to be fixed. Bottom line is don't do the writing. The boys hate it. Do it orally or as a demonstation.
The home school folk... well since they do it at home it will need to be written out. This maybe why it wasn't corrected.

Good points, Mark.
Interestingly, the two types of kids who made the most Merits were the Commanders' Kids and...................
wait for it.................................
...............Home Schoolers, whose mothers used the Ranger Merits as part of their curriculum.

Re: Merit essays become oral reports
My father was a commander in Straight Arrows up till I was a Pioneer. Pioneers didn't do merits unless they had master rating they could work ahead on TB merits. We went to CoG and sometime later I went back to Rangers as TB. I wasn't a homeschooler but my dad supported my efforts. It was self motivated and dad helped when I asked for help to go here or there to complete requirements.
