Re: Our new house
I noticed a gun range down in the basement. Those walls were covered with foam sound proofing. GRIN!

Re: Our new house
It was a cold windy day for the start of framing today. Felt more like March than May
Started by building a load bearing wall in the basement
Made a door way for the stairs to come through
Then put on the rim boards
Then the floor joists (christi on far left-3 ladies from our church in the middle)

Re: Our new house
This is where it gets exciting. In a couple of days, you will actually see the floor plan of the house taking shape.

Re: Our new house
Saturday
I was there all day so I have more pics
It was HOT this afternoon nice breeze outside, but not much of it got inside those walls
Today we built & set up the interior walls & leveled the exterior walls
Pastor Bryan on left
Pastor of the Catholic church on right
This guy was amazing! he is professional home builder & was calling the shots today. He could look at the plan & start rattling off lumber lengths & then wham there was a wall.

Re: Our new house
Thanks Chris for sharing the build with us. I loved framing. I was on a framing crew for 1.5 years we built some 60 houses. It was some of the best experience I got growing up. It helped a bunch knowing how these houses are built.

Re: Our new house
Interesting to see different building styles based on climate. First thing that caught my eye was the lack of gabble end attic vents. Then I looked as closely at the rest of the soffit as I could in the pictures and didn't see any vent pieces there either. Obviously less need for attic ventilation in such a cold climate... Our shingles down here would curl and crack within a few years without substantial attic ventilation.
Speaking of which, I installed a whole house fan (some people refer to them as "attic fans") a few weeks ago and it has really helped. We still haven't turned on the AC yet this year and we've had several days into the low to mid 90's with mid to upper 80's a daily norm. It does take a little more thought than just sliding a thermostat lever because you have to change which windows are opened or closed based on the time of day and where you are in the house, all the while keeping a decent CFM airflow.
One last story and then I'll quit hijacking your thread! Most people who come over seem to appreciate our approach of going with the flow (or temperature) as compared to most Americans, saying things like how much it reminds them of when they grew up, etc. etc. But we did have one young couple come over the other night for small group that kind of flipped out about how "hot" it was in our house. If we ever see an EMP, serious economic collapse, or reduced energy availability in this country, people like that are going to have a ha-a-a-rd time. (Cue Marlon Brando voice) What could happen? So you sweat a little...

Hot & humid
Siding work on our house suspended till Monday due to the heat.
(I guess volunteers can be more choosy about when they work)

Re: Our new house
That only counts for inside work in 70 degree temps. Sunday school temps. Rangers 1.0 would have been out there and had it done. Grin!

Hey if you don't post any pictures we will all get grumpy. Even us Rangers 1.0 guys. We must have pictures...books we just eat them. Pictures we go over like it was our very own.
