Lots of overtime Empty Lots of overtime

Post by Mark Jones August 17th 2014, 7:28 am

Last 3 weeks have been 10 hour plus days and working my days off unless I have a Ranger event to go to...grin!

Today sunday working half a day and then boat building at the Ranger Annex.

School back in session makes for lots of extra work.

I could probablly make it in 2 hours if I didn't stop for breaks, gas and the law. GRIN! When in Ferguson do as Fergusons do. LAWLESS!

So in my little ole world. I will obey the law. Drive the speed limit and stop for a break and get some gas and do it all in 4 hours. GRIN!

When I worked (mostly standing around) 28 hours a week, I had lots of time to spend here, nowadays I work almost double that.

means for less time to hang around here. Smile

Lot of long days, somedays I get home in time to spend 1-2 hours with the family & then its off to bed. Crying or Very sad

Been there, done that.

Try being out doing dope deals and search warrants until 2:00 AM, go home, then back at work at 9:00 the next morning.

We honestly had some days when we were doing gang "roundups" (multiple search warrants and arrest warrants) when we would start the Entrance Team briefing at 6:00 AM, and we wouldn't have the last prisoner booked in and drugs weighed, tested, & logged at the Evidence Bureau until 1:00 the next morning.

Lots of overtime Empty Re: Lots of overtime

Post by Mark Jones August 27th 2014, 11:05 am

I have had many years of 500 plus hours of forced overtime. I got divorced during one of those years.

I try and keep my overtime down below 100 hours but that is hard to do.

I learned along time ago. We live on a 40 hour week. Any over time is split 50, 50 between my wife and I. It's mad money and it goes towards things that She wants or I want. Many my overtime goes to fund RR ministry, trips, paying ways for folks to go.
I buy my gear with that money as well.

My wife spends it differently and often if I had a say in it there would be a heated discussion. This system works well for us... WHEN it's forced we both reap benefits so when I come home dog tired and take a shower and eat supper and go to bed...she covers for me and takes up the slack as she is getting big bucks as well.

Some folks live on the overtime and when it dries up and they put a NO overtime on it....they start sweating because they have bought cars and houses and such that still have payments to be made...

I enjoy having some mad money to bless folks with.

I just figured it out.

My last 3 years in the Task Force, I did between 800 and 1,000 hours of overtime, with the average being 920.

Your system of splitting it with the wife, once again, shows your wisdom and sound judgement.

But in this case, both participants are happy with half.Smile

It all boils down to what you can be satisfied with. In America, our "material" bottom line is something that most folks around the world only dream of. Dave Ramsey says "Live like no one else today, so you can live like no one else tomorrow." I like the first half, but the second half, not so much. I know I'm kind of simplifying his philosophy, but motivation can come in good and bad forms. Work hard, pray hard, and help those around you. As someone once observed, he's never seen a U-Haul behind the hearse.

I don't believe if God blesses us and we prosper we need to go dumpster diving despite a million dollar bank account. I have him recently alter that motto with live no one else and give like no one else.

I once saw tv show about a lady who us a multimillionaire who goes dumpster diving cake that is sealed but tossed out due to expiration, pees in a jar and dumps it outside, and micro accounts for literally every penny spent.

That is a great idea Mark has especially if your wife works just as hard in the home and raising kids.

I once heard a story of an elderly millionaire who married a much younger woman. He told her that she could enjoy his wealth while he was alive, but that she had to promise to bury all of his wealth with him.

Sure enough, he died before her. At the end of the funeral, she asked to be alone with her husband before they closed the coffin.

When everyone else left, she said, "Dear, I promised that when you were buried, you could take all of your wealth with you, and I will keep that promise. I have had the estate appraised, and got a listing for the full value."

She reached into the coffin and placed a piece of paper in the millionaire's shirt pocket, then said, "and here's the check".

The overtime has pushed us to 7 days a week 10 hours a day. Our Dad's and Lads campout is this weekend. I am working through.

Nice big "mad money" checks. Makes me want to buy some new tools or gear or spend it on gas money for Ranger trips. GRIN!

I had 5 days of vacation left. I got it scheduled for each of our 4 backpacks coming up these next 4 months. Woo whoo Rangers..that's a score.

Very nice. I'm working on a lead for a job at Norfolk Southern. They are hiring rail conductors. Obviously, I have no training but they train you for 3 weeks in GA. Starting salary $60k yr.
