FCF Trek
So I am sitting and thinking of further development and challenges for our outpost. We have 10 Frontiersmen with current rules it will likely be a bit before we make any to Buckskin, besides myself. I'm managing to get in under old rules.
Anyway, as something different, I'm honestly contemplating leading an FCF Trek. At least an outpost one but perhaps open to the Chapter / State. This would be the first one in the state I think. Since this would essential be an FCF hike and the vast majority if not all of the young bucks experience has been with Car camp traces, I'm thinking about talking about it now for next summer to give people prep time.
Any thoughts? How crazy am I? Anyone want to come to Iowa next year?

Re: FCF Trek
I have not done a trek. We used to offer them but few showed up so they quit them. The main problem I see with them is most folks I see don't have the gear to handle it. I don't yet. Backpacking we are all over that but no real FCF gear to handle a hike of any kind. At Rendezvous this past year I put on my center seam mocs I had made with a leather extra soul..and about went lame just walking around camp. I had to put my boots back on. I heard several tell me the same thing down there.
I love backpacking and a trek would be just that..I just need better gear.

Same experience in moccasins. We're just not acclimated to walking around without any ankle support. Although kids seem to do just fine all day barefoot.

Re: FCF Trek
Buy a pair of Vibrams and rebuild your ability to walk "barefoot style". Your whole gait will change and you can build up all the support muscles in your feet and calves.

Re: FCF Trek
Howdy!
Yes, you are crazy, but so am I . . .
I personally have a few hundred miles on a pair of moccs, so some experience to help you.
First problem is gear-kit, as mentioned. Most lads are fine with developing gear enough to camp at a site with a parking lot, well mowed lawn, and a porta-poty. Nothing wrong with that. But, it takes a lot of work to develop more.
I have planned two FCF treks with no success. One was close to happening when a family came down sick that would have made 3 of 5 participants, plus some really bad weather coming in that weekend. Canceled at the last minute.
What I had instructed was for them to make as much gear as they could, then substitute modern stuff for what they didnt have. I could not see punishing a lad for not having the money or support from home to acquire a bunch of stuff when others didnt have that problem. However, they all were required to make some sort of period pack out of canvas, which I was there to instruct and help make. All that took was time, as I provided the canvas and instructions. The rest was simple gear in a flint and steel kit, canteen, extra pair of foot wear, an extra shirt, and a sleeping bag or wool blanket. Food gets rolled up in the sleeping bag or carried in their new pack.
I have a set of trekking instructions and teachings I created when I heard there would be a trekking merit, but didnt have the info yet.
As to your tender feet, I have been there. Mark, the issue is (if your like me) you wear strong work boots all day. Your feet do not move inside, and muscles on the bottom of your foot do not get stretched or worked at all. What I started doing was exercising my toes and feet with stretches and going barefoot around the house when possible. This eliminated the foot problem. I want to walk out from a weekend trek just like I live in the woods and could go right back in better than I came out. So, some prep time and training was needed.
Hope this helps.

Re: FCF Trek
Simeon. I just acquired some heavy canvas to make some leggings out of. Do you have some patterns you could share with me and my AR Group?

Des Moines. Unsure on specifics like location or time for Trek, but when I floated the idea out at Trace 2 week ago there seemed to be enough interest to motivate me to pursue it. I'll keep posted here.

Re: FCF Trek
We are doing a trek on October 20th and 21st. Saturday morning at about 10 am. The place is in the middle of Missouri.
We have had 2 trek prep events. Making gear Haversack and diamond fly.
I have had some interests and we are going to go. I figure when all is said and done we will have 7 go.
We at trying to go all pierod correct with the exception of boots. Those we will ask them to cover with leather or canvas.
It will be fun. I may take Red Squirrels advice and try and work up to it. I wore my mocs all weekend last week and was ok foot wise...we had 2" of rain..my feet were soaking but they didn't hurt.

Re: FCF Trek
It's only 2 weeks and a few days out. Ordered some stuff I didn't have yet to go the distance. Crazy Crow is helping me out with a Hunters Frock and a Canvas Rain Poncho and I had to have a wooden canteen all period correct.
My diamond fly is ready and heavy with Linseed oil and it's been drying out now for about 5 months. I may have to treat it again to make it bone dry.
Here is the flyer and info for the trip. If any of you Ole Timers feel like this is your time come enjoy this trek with us.

We are expecting 15. Could be 7 and it could be 30...who really knows. I got a permit and we will be trekking down along a river for a mile or less. The area is in the Lead Mine Conservation Area and it's Big. Surrounding it is the Amish and related religions.
Looking for a grand time. They did request we not do any target shooting as it's youth bow season. They have a target range by car it's about 20 minute drive. By foot it's about a mile.
