First Cold Weather Backpack Trip!!
Back home now from an AWESOME trip!! God really gave us a good weekend for our first CWBT because the temps plummeted to 14*F last night which is pretty cold for us down here in the South.
We had 6 boys, 3 commanders, 1 dad (who I'm hoping will come aboard with us), and my dad's (Cmdr Paul) lab who slept with him in his sleeping bag!

There were a few things that everyone learned about what to or not to bring, but everyone did fairly well overall. Only one boy had a bag that wasn't rated as well as it should have been, but he did well in spite of that.
Here's a pic of my son Seth, complete with the monkey he's had since day one.

And this is a few of the guys and one of our Rangers hanging around the fire this morning after breakfast. The rest of the boys were off playing and I never got a whole group shot.

Lastly I need to thank Mark big time for telling me about the Thermarest ultralite cot!!! That was the best night I've spent in the woods. The Mountain Hardwear Lamina 0 also kept me warm all night long. I had my capaline 3 base layer plus a long sleeved shirt over that and two pair of wool socks thanks to JoeCool's advice. Didn't really need my gloves at all or my cap except when I moved and got my head out of the whole too much.
Had a great time and we're looking forward to our next one coming up in March.

Re: First Cold Weather Backpack Trip!!
Great report Phillip. I really enjoy these. Keep it up and you will have a whole bunch going with you.
I saw Bass pro had the Luxury lite cot last weekend.
We are doing Ranger Derby these next 4 weeks so no campouts for now for us. Next one will be in March Rappelling campout.
A lot of Commanders would have called it off with those temps... you did well and they learned they could do just fine in it.

All the boys who went felt like they accomplished something with that camp. Also built stronger bonds with those who overcame the elements together.
