Back to Ellicott
Heading back up to Ellicott Rock Wilderness area this weekend with the outpost. Last time we went it was only a one night trip, but we'll be doing a two nights this go around. We did a two nighter this past spring that seemed to work pretty well for us
It takes about 3 hours to get up to the mountains for us, so by the time you travel both ways, pack in and back out, set up and tear down camp, there's not much time for anything else on a one nighter. When we do the two nighters we can do some hiking during the middle day.
Looking forward to making it to the rocks where they enscribed the point of all three states meeting (SC, GA, NC). The first rock was enscribed by Andrew Ellicott in 1811. The second rock enscription was by a larger surveying party in 1813 who found that Ellicott was off in his findings by 10 feet.
Should be fun for the boys this weekend. It'll be the last hurrah for them this summer before they head back to school.

Re: Back to Ellicott
We have a city named after Ellicott in MD.
Two nights really makes it worth it.

Re: Back to Ellicott
Yep. Looking forward to it! Of course as usual, work gets real hairy right before a trip making it impossible for me to get everything packed up nice and slowly. Instead it'll be a mad rush on Thursday morning to get out of the house, and I'll still probably have to stop by REI to get whatever it is that I either couldn't find, or just don't have.
Of course, it's not a bad stop to make! Nice store there in Greenville, SC.

Schedule in a extra 45 minutes for the REI stop. GRIN! Take lots of pictures. Share those memories. I can't wait to hear the report.

Re: Back to Ellicott
Had a great time backpacking this weekend with the boys! We ended up with five rangers, two commanders, and two visitors who all had a blast! I would've been fine staying on through tomorrow too, but... somebody's got to lead praise and worship. I'll post some pictures when I get a chance later. Getting ready to go to a birthday party for one of our commander's wife.
We've gotten pretty good at packing into a camp, hiking during the middle day, and then packing back out. The next step in my plan is to find a shorter trail loop where we can pack all three days, camping at two different locations. Maybe that trip would be a good chance to get our 25 mile patch...
