Grin. What a generation of ........ Empty Grin. What a generation of ........

Post by Mark Jones October 11th 2013, 6:21 pm

My Ipad 4 has been off for 4 months. It won't print. Has no usb access and you can't program a wireless modem with out a Ethernet cord and the programs we use to look up our records you cant read them...besides another 10 not so critical things that didn't work or work as well as my Windows laptop.

Boss told me I was anti new technology. I laughed..if you was to look at my office in one second you would know better than that..but I endulged him. So let me ask you a question. Why would I want to give up something that works for something that doesn't because it's new technology? GRIN! How about if you give up your printer and your laptop and just use the Ipad? Errrrr ummmm...aaaaaah well I need to print....he said. I just rolled my eyes and thought What a generation of ......

Our society is being fed a steady diet of "less is more" Makes me want to kick them right in the part they are using for a brain. How can less be better if it does less? You can sure tell the devil is in charge of this world they believe a lie even when the facts point it straight out.

So. Now I feel better. Rant mode off.

Mark, I am one of your greatest fans.

Man has used printed material for 3,000 years, and now wants to replace it with 40 year old technology.

Maybe Obama & Biden would have liked it better if the Constitution had been done on a computer, because you would not be able to tell the Original from an Improved version.

I like paper, because it's easier to directly compare Page 2 with Page 5. I don't have to Boot-Up my File Cabinet. And my wife gets mad when I write notes in the margins of the Computer Screen.

You are so totally correct! I am butting heads with the boys on having a traditional paper bible vs "an App for that".  And some of the most glaring contradictions are the boys are very interested in the survival training.  And I'm crazy I talk to them about the world they are in.  About Revelation and no matter which position you are in on the Rapture, there is no statement saying how bad God will let it be before the Trumpet blows.
I also talk about what's on the news.  Katrina, Sandy, the California Fires, Colorado Floodings, the local disasters like our flooding and tornados. Or just every day disasters like car breakdowns or old fashioned "lost". I'm not trying to scare them by any means, but simply make them more awake and aware, so if, God forbid, something happens, they can handle it better.  A moment of, "Hey, remember when Cmdr. Tom talked about this, and did that?"  When you read the report of days for help to arrive and weeks for normal utilities to start to come back up.  Is it any wonder why I try to teach the boys skills of before electricity.  fire   Fire still burns it still give light and heat.  It cooks my food and boils my water.  It is the heart of my camp in whatever situation I am in.  It has served that role for 5000 thousand years.  I think it will keep going a little longer for me.  Show me an app that will cook my fish, boil my water, or keep me warm and we can revisit this conversation.Mad
"App for that" That phone is a dead battery or a water accident away from being a paperweight.  My bible has been on trips for YEARS!  Rain, snow, cold, day, night, tears and laughs.  IT STILL READS!  :study:   by now I have stickys in it and highlights in it and it's worn and broken in.  It's matured and matured me.
The translation of Disciple is "Disciplined learner", How do we expect to discipline our boys if we can't even get them to crack open a book?

I too love tech but I also stress we may have a shtf (scat hits the fan) situation brewing in this country or even the world for that matter.  I find it so odd our district and nat'l leadership thinks learning how to build fires isn't what boys want to do anymore. We don't need more of the same they get at home or school.

I am that guy who uses his Ipod Touch for his bible when pastor reads his main text during his sermon. I also keep a KJV in my car too. I have several other study bibles at home too. Even though I'm a user of bible app its for convenience of finding ch and verse, copying verses to notes, and doing word searches.

I don't get Apple's design of only giving you one port to connect it to a computer or power source. Now, Windows tablet does a comparison showing it to have USB and SD media card ports. Basically, its a flat laptop you can take on the go and do it all.

As for me and my outpost we're gonna keep it real and ole fashioned. I've not even done any GMA related merits in AR since restarting. What's a GMA medal going to do when you're freezing, need shelter, starving, thirsty, lost, need to tie a splint, or defend yourself?

Christi,

You were tec savvy enough to leave out your age in your profile! Learning machines are easy compared to spouses lol!

I'm right there with you. every Ranger over 6th grade, your first year with us is basically the Trail of the Grizzly, with a few greens or silvers for your advancement. I even had this conversation with a freshman who started up with us 3 weeks back. Yes his vest will say Expedition Rangers, but he's going to go for GMA. He has 4 years before graduation, he has the time if he does the work. I explained to him that we are an outdoors group, and that's what he wants.
OK well then there are 8 specific merits every Ranger here becomes familiar with in outdoor skills. They are the foundation and essentially pre-reqs for a lot of others. he understood that.
I explained "Now this is something we start teaching at a younger ages. So occasionally, you might hop in with some of the younger boys for those merits. It's nothing against you or personal, its just you have to build a foundation before you build the roof." He was fine with that, as was his mom.
Now I did give credit where credit is due. "Now these merits are usually designed for a 5th or 6th grader to complete in a month. I realize you are not a 5th or 6th grader. if you can get the merit in 2 weeks or so, and pass a field test, that's fine with me. I will let you run at your speed.:

maybe I am crazy, but the skills that have lasted for generations I feel have deserved the right to be passed on. I am far more concerned in a young man's ability to care for he and his loved ones than his sports or pc skills.

I don't disagree with you that such a situation may come too soon. But I haven't really preached that. I don't know why. I have enough boys who want to prep for a zombie apocalypse that trying to get them to simply think about a realistic US collapse is an entire other conversation. That and if I can use the nightly news for imagery of natural disaster as motivation to teach the same skills that the boys will need, without being thought as a radical and offending someone too easily offended, well then I consider that a win. I don't want to win the argument to loose the soul

I've kept the political end of world as we know it to a minimum around the younger kids but you make good points on using current events to stress the need to prep for short term disasters.

I once asked my Sectional Cmdr how he Royal Rangers Valor. He said him and the FCF Pres were driving between here and Cleveland and a drunk driver went off the road and his car was on fire. The seatbelt was jammed so he pulled out his pocket knife and cut him out. Now think if his Cmdrs didn't teach him tool craft and stress the need to carry a pocket knife the man headed to hell might not have been saved. Now he has a second chance.

So while we can do some sports or video games now and then during rec time our core skills should teach things that help our boys (and girls) live.

A good point.

I have also seen photographs of people (or orphaned children) in the devastation of World War I, World War II, Cambodia, etc. Everything that they had was destroyed.

Those people had to obtain help, help themselves, or perish.

There can be plenty of Hard Times, and it not yet be "The" Tribulation.

Excellent point to make to the people that beam me up think an Angel is ready at the transporter controls to snatch them away from the bad stuff. USA has been like Israel faithful in times of lesser abundance and wandering from God when we are prosperous. What happened to Israel when God wanted to bring them back to himself? He let their enemies take them into captivity. Just like them its happening from within us first and them we're weak enough to be taken down from the outside.

I've been reading how Obama has fired 9 generals so far. If true thats unprecedented and cause for concern.
