Compton Trail head to the top of Hemmend in Hollow Falls Backpack and day hike

Post by Mark Jones on October 9th 2013, 12:44 pm

It's been 10 years since I did this trip. My 20 year old son was 10 years old when we were on this trail last. It was his first backpack. I was told by my 1st GMA that had been on this trail that it was really cool. We had to go on it. I asked how much of a elevation change. Oh..maybe 200 feet.... over 3/4 of a mile or so....
GRIN!.. it ended up being 1100 feet over 1.2 miles straight down... GRIN! Well we are doing it again..but this time we will backpack in and setup base camp up on top of that 1100 foot and then day hike from there down and back up. Elevations are always tough..but this one is doable with day packs on.

You might as well come with us. It's a sight to behold.

In one of those pictures you will find 3 guys. Me with my gps and another guy looking at a map and another guy looking at the guy looking at the map who was leading us a 1/2 mile in the wrong direction. I told him at 500 feet he was going the wrong direction then at about a quarter mile I told him again. Then this picture was taken. I told him. "Well where we are going is back where we first met you guys before you took us on this wild goose chase. We are turning back and going that way..if you want to continue on that way you can but your lost as a goose in church on sunday. GRIN!
I got a kick out of the guy that took the picture. He told me I have learned to keep my eye on the trail and to keep my eye on you because you are never far off the trail.

These trails and paths we take can get old in our mind. I didnt' remember any of this trail... my speculations were from topo maps and what my gps was telling me. Figuring the topo lines and just where the top of the falls was at was my best guess... sometimes it just boils down to let's look and see.

Great times and we really enjoyed the hike. Going again in 2 weeks

I didn't see a compass in the picture.

If you don't know which way is up, a map is of dubious value. Dunno

The red string that is attached to my gps that leads to my siliva compass in my pocket. (Only keep it for a backup..on these trails down here... you can't walk 50 feet without a turn and a bend and loop.) Sun was out so we knew where North was. He has it backwards of course. GRIN!
We were all the way to the right on this red trail when I stopped and said ... it's time to turn back and go the right way...GRIN!
