Astronomy Empty Astronomy

Post by strods October 9th 2013, 12:38 am

Back in my day, my Scoutmaster had a great way of teaching constellations by connecting the dots to point from one to another. I haven't found another source on it but I've written what I remember.
Open forum on this one, if you notice other options let me know. I just didn't want to bring an Ipad out to teach a skill handed down for millenia

This is "techy", but absolutely neat.......

My wife has an ap loaded on her Iphone (cost about $5.00). She just opens the ap, points her Iphone in any direction in the night sky, and it will give the names of stars and connect-the-dots & name the constellations.

I've got a Blackberry, & haven't figured how to get the ap on it yet (stupid Blackberry).

It was one of my favorites and I did it on my own as a trailblazer.

I'd say use it if it helps them learn it. Then next leave it behind and if they can do without the tech.

A few astronomy resources:
Stellarium
Free planetarium level software for Windows, Mac, and Linux

Google Sky Map for Android
Free star finder app for Android phones and tablets.
Search by name and an arrow will direct you towards it
Toggle constellations on and off

SkEye for Android
More advanced star finder app
Attach your phone to a cheap telescope and it will help you find deep sky objects like more expensive telescopes

I personally have a Celestron SkyProdigy 130mm Newtonian Reflector Telescope.
It automatically aligns itself using a camera and then you select an object on its keypad.
I can see cloud bands and four moons when I look at Jupiter.
I can see the rings of Saturn.
I can see the Andromeda Galaxy and several nebulae.
There will not be very much classroom time for the Astronomy Merit in my outpost.

Hey, Wright. I once brought my scope to Rangers for a lunar eclipse that night. The boys enjoyed it. I have a "light bucket", a 10" Dobs. I'd love to go to a scope with an equatorial mount, so I can take pictures. But first, I want an observatory to put it in. Ever heard of the SkyShed POD? I'd already have it, but the Canadian manufacturer charges almost a grand to ship it. Looking for a used one in the NW to buy.

We're homeschooling my son now (that's a major reason for my lack of posting) and one thing we are doing is if a class unit has a merit badge, we cover both, whichever is harder. Well I found that my original power point is a bit outdated. Between tech providing better telescopes and probes getting further out, local astronomy is one of the most active areas of discovery and ever updating.

Here is an updated powerpoint as of this date.

hmm.. would have to create a shared folder, but not that difficult. You likely aren't the only person interested in such a thing.
Give me a few.

What I'm really interested in are the booklets you made up like the one you posted sometime back for Compass.

Oh, I try to post here at Ranger Chat, usually under a topic by the merit name.
For my Astronomy booklet, look up at the top of the chat.

For future reference, start with a search by the merit name here.
If you see a topic, check it out.
If you don't start one and shout out, we're all happy to share and help.
