Starting Multiple Patrols Empty Starting Multiple Patrols

Post by strods September 9th 2013, 10:55 pm

So our outpost has finally grown to the level that I think it is time to have 2 separate Patrols.
Now we have had the officers (SPG, PG, Etc), so I don't think leadership will be difficult.
What I would like is advice on getting spirit developed, or maybe even as simple as getting agreement on names and flags.

Any ideas are welcome.

Starting Multiple Patrols Empty Re: Starting Multiple Patrols

Post by Mark Jones September 10th 2013, 9:25 am

After 20 years in it. I have only really seen one patrol system work for about 3 years. It was dependent on the Sr. Guide of the boys.

This young man new his job and did it well.

For the patrol system to work you MUST let the boys do it. PIEROD. When we as well intentioned commanders get our 2 cents in there. EVERY TIME WE DO THAT WE kill the Patrol Spirit. IT's their game.

Go through the SR. Guide and let the rest of the boys do their jobs in the Patrol System.

Most of the time the Patrol system won't work because of well intentioned Ranger Commanders. Yet it does take the right SR. Guide as well. When the team get's to cooking it's a cool thing to see in action.

Similar to how Sgt goes through the Corporals to issue most commands to thr platoon. Then he hold the cpl's responsible for organizing the patrols and completing their tasks. Hey, thats olde military stuff...RR1.0 methods are outdated.... Rolling Eyes how does a patrol system work when you just play games, sports, etc...

I have always had the NCO mentality with this anyway. If was just a little weak when everyone was on the same patrol.

I've worked up a few sheets for meeting minutes. Inspection will move to a patrol level and I've borrowed a few things from BSA, so we'll see

This next sunday night we will implement the 2 patrol system if I can keep my Sr. Commander from getting in there messing it up. I had to send several firey emails back and forth to try and get him to see this year were working more than just merits. I would love to see the patrol system in action. It will be a job but it's possible with this group I have.

Your Sr Cmdr doesn't want you detouring from merits to focus on patrol system?

I think that it is easier to see "Progress on Paper" with Merits than it is with Leadership.

It is also something tangible that you can show to the parents.

Leadership is not something that you can achieve by punching out tasks and giving the boy an "I.B.B." (I've Been-there Badge).

Its much more worth it to teach true leadership than IBB's.

Well first night out it seemed exciting. Have some name & yells. Flag ideas are the homework. Well see how the first inspection goes
